Published December 24, 2003

KARACHI, Dec 23: A sense of insecurity prevails in the Ali Mohammad Mohalla, Lyari Town, after the killing of Abdul Ghani Baloch, a retired official of the OGDC.

He was popular among all sections of the Baloch community for his interest in social activities.

Hundreds of people representing all sections of the Baloch populace including political leaders, NGO activists participated in the funeral of the deceased on Monday. Prominent among them were Hasil Khan Bizenjo, MNA Nabil Gabol and Balochistan MPA Sherjan Baloch.

The funeral took place amid tension. A large police posse was present to prevent any untoward incident. The shops were closed as a sign of collective mourning.

The Ali Mohammad Mohalla hit headlines last year when the residents foiled a dacoity bid which resulted in the killing of eight people. Thereafter, a sense of uncertainty and insecurity has prevailed forcing the authorities to deploy security forces in some places in the area. The locality, populated by the Zikri sect, most of them fishermen, has been without basic facilities for years. A press release of all Pakistan Muslim Zikri Anjuman says that a demonstration will be staged on Wednesday evening in front of the Karachi Press Club to condemn the killing.
