The man, identifying himself as a soldier of the Border Security Force, says his battalion does not have access to nutritious food.

A man who claims to be a soldier of the Indian armed forces has released a series of videos on social media citing 'corruption' in the Indian army as the reason his battalion receives substandard food and experiences frequent hunger.

The man in the video introduces himself as Tej Bahadur Yadav, a soldier serving in the 29th Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF). He is standing with a snow-covered mountain in the backdrop.

"We don't want to blame the government because it does send us the food. However, it is all sold off in the markets before it gets to us," Yadav claims in the video.

"A lot of times we go to sleep hungry," the soldier adds, saying their breakfast consists of a "burnt paratha" with tea, and tasteless lentils for lunch and dinner.

"How are we expected to perform a 10-hour-long duty with this nutrition," Yadav says, adding the situation has been persisting for over 10 days and counting.

"I want to reiterate the Indian government does send us food but we don't know where it goes," the BSF soldier said, adding he fears for his life for raising the issue.

"Spread this message and make sure it reaches the concerned authorities as I do not know what will become of me after this video is posted," Yadav says.

Later, Indian Home Minister Raj Nath directed the ministry of foreign affairs to submit a report on BSF, DawnNews reported.

In all honesty what can one expect from a third rate force like the Indian army.

PAKISTAN FIRST Jan 09, 2017 11:35pm

Really, now that is interesting. While India spending so much money on acquiring latest weapon but not paying attention to the soldiers if they are properly taken care with the most basic needs.

Amar Jan 09, 2017 11:38pm

Salute to indian democracy and technology any one can escalates to higher authority bypassing seniors.

Azi Jan 09, 2017 11:43pm

Buy more rafales as if they will ever be used in combat. Waste money on items that don't matter instead of using it in real men.

Incoming couch warriors..

PAKISTAN Jan 09, 2017 11:43pm

I think Pakistan Army should send them food as a gesture of goodwill.

Hauka khan Jan 09, 2017 11:47pm

Of course Indian will deny this video!

Zutha Jan 09, 2017 11:49pm

Rajnath has directed the issue to Home secretary, not Ministry of foreign affairs.

Al Fatmi Jan 09, 2017 11:49pm

He will be dishonorably discharged for sure.

Sardar Singh Jan 09, 2017 11:55pm

This has to be seriously taken by indian government. At the same time it is good to see that people are using social media to convey their issue and govt is proactively monitoring it.

Khan Jan 09, 2017 11:55pm

Very unfortunate indeed regardless of which country he belongs to. He deserves much better for doing his duty in such harsh conditions.

Thought Jan 09, 2017 11:58pm

It's clear no army men want this type of tough job specially in these sort if circumstances,

Thought Jan 09, 2017 11:59pm

I think you should go to strike

Nr Jan 09, 2017 11:59pm

I think it's the same story on both sides.

Imran Jan 10, 2017 12:02am

The solders always suffer price for being solder is very high. I have respect for them whoever side they fight for. If there is justice in the world then they should not suffer for anything for their sacrifices but there is no justice.

anees zed Jan 10, 2017 12:13am

Modi-fied India !!!

Mehmood Jan 10, 2017 12:18am

Poor solder should be feed and looked after well.

surya Jan 10, 2017 12:17am

Thanks for bringing this to light , I am sure correct action will be taken. We don't want our soldier to live like this.

Niks Jan 10, 2017 12:24am

It's not an hidden fact that defence is the most corrupt department. No accountability is enforced in the name of national security. The lives of jawan are taken for granted and " fauj me jawan marne ke liye he bharti hota hai " this statement is literally adhered to...

If it's duty of a soldier to defend us. It's our duty and unalienable right to protect them , their rights and their families.

harish jurel Jan 10, 2017 12:38am

Shame on corrupted officers and thnxs to Mr. Rajnath Singh to order for investigation.

Khalid Jan 10, 2017 12:33am

Incrediable India...

vorshal Jan 10, 2017 12:38am

Shame on corruption. Shame on the official machinery.

Although this news has been shown on some Indian newspapers but I must thank The Dawn very sincerely for showing these clips.

Although Indian minister has asked for a review of this report, I would expect nothing less than a demotion and transfer of the concerned officials. This should start with their transfer out of the zone with immediate effect to allow a fair investigation.

Once again, thanks a lot for a great job indeed!

Mark Jan 10, 2017 12:38am

soldiers fight fr their country while politicians loot

Pakistan Uber Alles Jan 10, 2017 12:39am

And these are the poor innocent soldiers that become gun fodder. They are sacrificed by politicians and generals to fulfill their own agendas. All these politicians that talk tough today don't have to spend a single day on the border under these circumstances.

khabboo Jan 10, 2017 12:48am

The guy is out there trying to do his job. This is sad to see that those protecting their motherland are not provided the basics. Hope he does not get reprimanded for making the video. Peace out.

RexImperio Jan 10, 2017 12:47am

India cannot even adequately feed its own army and Indians talk about becoming a superpower.

azfar Jan 10, 2017 12:48am

As a Pakistani and as a human being, I salute this brave soldier. He has transcended his stature by taking on whosoever is to be blamed for whatever he is complaining about. Consider our jingoism and the stark reality of the conditions in which our soldiers perform their duty.

nasir Jan 10, 2017 12:50am

Feed them man!

Indian muSLIM Jan 10, 2017 12:50am

Pity on these solider who are in front line while our Politicians doesn't care of anything except bagging money for their Personal and Party Funds

Umlins Jan 10, 2017 01:01am

This is pathetic

Faiza Salman Jan 10, 2017 12:58am

This is against human rights, These troops should not be there in the UN declared disputed territory, instead they should be home with their families.

IMTIAZ ALI KHAN Jan 10, 2017 01:06am

This is the state of my people in IndoPak. While politicians play with people's minds. Soldier Tej Bahadur Yadav we respect soldiers on both sides and it causes pain when we see them get hurt for these incompetent politicians.

Suraj Jan 10, 2017 01:14am

Now it's time to eliminate corruption from our military and yes I know there is misuse of power in military

Joseph Jan 10, 2017 01:27am

If you can't afford to feed your boys, then just start talks with Pakistan and restore peace in Kashmir by withdrawing your troops.

sfomann Jan 10, 2017 01:28am

This is terrible. These soldiers are just doing their job to server the nation and this is how they are being treated.

deepak NZ Jan 10, 2017 01:36am

This is really very vey bad ... Soldiers should get the best food.

Goraya Jan 10, 2017 01:32am

4th largest military in the world and soldiers are deprived of meals.....i feel sad for them

Imran Jan 10, 2017 01:38am

I hope the soldier is not punished for raising the issue and appropriate is action taken against the culprits.

Omar Jan 10, 2017 01:38am

How can they waste billions on fighter aircrafts, nuclear weapons and missiles when they cant feed their soldiers/citizens, have endemic poverty to the tune of 400 million people and lack toilets. There is something seriously wrong with the mindset of our neighboor to the east who persistently seek war and continue to subjugate Kashmir while not addressing the most basic amenities of life. We seriously got the worst and most complex neighboor in the world

SaeEd Jan 10, 2017 01:45am

This solders is more sensible than average Pakistani. At least not blaming government democracy and secularism. Culprits are the people among us not in assemblies and they are more powerful.

Safacca Jan 10, 2017 01:51am

Shinning India

Isabhai Surat wala Jan 10, 2017 01:50am

Mazhar naqvi Jan 10, 2017 02:07am

Lolz... for the one of the world top class modern army.

a Ali Jan 10, 2017 02:42am

it happens in india with nearly 40% of their already homeless population... tragedy.

pakistani Jan 10, 2017 02:49am

Feel sorry for this dude.

Pak - India are really wasting their time fighting.

We really need to solve Kashmir and live like good neighbors.

Indians need to let go, or at least let the Kashmiris chose what they want

Planettrekker Jan 10, 2017 02:53am

Brave soldier to highlight the corruption, and theft, in supplies acquisition. Not only does he have to fight both the elements and the enemy, he is now reluctantly forced to highlight the rot within the system. May his efforts succeed and pocket-lining officials (civilian and military) be brought to book.

Javed Jan 10, 2017 03:41am

I guess, I know who is out of a job and probably in the locker!

Ali Jan 10, 2017 03:43am

This is very bad. Feel sorry for the Indian and pakistani soldiers.

Singh.ra Jan 10, 2017 04:03am

Facility's in defense are praised proudly. But still may be some such case. Batter it revealed, Indian Government is proactively working to resolve such cases

Anz Jan 10, 2017 04:10am

He speaks truth. I have served and also suffered the same. This has to be resolved once and for all.

Vijay B Jan 10, 2017 04:12am

If this soldier's are allegations are confirmed to be true as they seem to be, then heads should fly and the situation rigorously investigated and duly rectified throughout all of India's armed forces. Simplest solution: Pass an ordinance by which food served to the foot soldiers MUST Be the exactly the same as that served in the officers mess. When it comes to something as basic as food all men are created equal. And there should be regular surprise checks in the field to see if this ordinance is being religiously adhered to

Abkibaar Jan 10, 2017 04:27am

When the Government of a large country comes to the aid of a common soldier's complaints, you know the nation is on the right track! The freedom and right of a common soldier to get his voice heard in the corridor of power confirms the constitution of the nation has been upheld by on and all.

ShyAM Jan 10, 2017 05:07am

There should be unbiased thorough investigation and if his allegations are true, the CO should be court mar-shelled. On the other hand if he has done it for sensationalism, he should be dis-honorably discharged.

AXH Jan 10, 2017 05:10am

This soldier had to courage to speak up against the dishonesty of those who are responsible for delivering food. Let's hope he is not reprimanded for his bold move.

Tamilselvan Jan 10, 2017 05:25am

If true, action must be taken against officials who are involved in this scam.

Sheikh Khalid Jan 10, 2017 05:31am

The Home Minister tells Foreign Affairs Ministry to investigate a Police Force under the control of his own ministry? Curious thinking, fascinating!

kuku Jan 10, 2017 05:27am

Not only is corruption that is hurting the soldier by the attitude of treating a sepoy less than human being carried over from British.

I can understand the British treating natives as sub-human, but the well off in subcontinent do the same, it is worst in military, with civilians officers just marginally better (e.g. treatment of peon, constables, etc.). Hope we can throw off this legacy, treat everybody as human only then we can say that we have gained independence from British.

Auginpk Jan 10, 2017 05:38am

This is pathetic. Necessary action should be taken to solve this problem.

Mitra Jan 10, 2017 05:54am

Looks like it's already reaches the concerned authorities as Indian Home Minister Raj Nath directed the ministry of foreign affairs to submit a report on BSF

fAROUQ OMARO Jan 10, 2017 05:59am

What a joke! Taking away food from soldiers whom you expect to protect your country?

AHsok Jan 10, 2017 06:04am

I am embarrassed because our country can't even look after our own army. You will not see any country where their army complains about hunger. This is embarrassing for every Indian.

Sri1 Jan 10, 2017 06:05am

It will be instructive to see how quickly this situation will be addressed. This Indian government takes prompt requisite action, remedial and punitive and that will be the case for this issue too. Good that those soldiers are getting guts to air grievances.

James bJorg Jan 10, 2017 06:23am

Shinning India......

maverik Jan 10, 2017 06:36am

Let's be honest, India has lost the plot. The economy has taken a massive hit, the neighbors don't like it, human rights violations are rampant, rape and crimes against women go unchecked...and now the ever famous corruption has finally reached the core of the Military as well. India has a lot of soul searching to do.

Rahul Jan 10, 2017 06:39am

Rajnath has directed ministry of Home affairs to submit a report... and not Foreign affairs.. the matter has got escalated to the level of PM Modi here.. Kudos to the jawan for showing courage to speak!!

ApPolo Jan 10, 2017 06:48am

Leave the inhuman occupation of Kashmir!

Singh.ra Jan 10, 2017 06:54am

Govt proactively taken it up.

Raj Jan 10, 2017 07:05am

It is shameful as an Indian. :(

Khan Jan 10, 2017 07:13am

I have full sympathy with these poor people's. Rich people's always exploit them .

Ppllaarrdd Jan 10, 2017 07:25am

Not only Indian army sleep without food but Indian public also.

Rao Sahab,haryana Jan 10, 2017 07:26am

Small correction BSF is not under Indian Army. BSF is a paramilitary force.

Gabrunyc Jan 10, 2017 07:32am

Unfortunately, this is truth coming out far too late. These soldiers are bravest of brave to serve in such conditions. Salute.

RAJIV Jan 10, 2017 07:37am

feels like someone put their hand through my chest, got hold of my heart and started squeezing... man, I am one of those silent majority, sitting somewhere comfortable, typing away and can do absolutely nothing. What a pathetic life :/

Abx Jan 10, 2017 07:40am

So much for professional army lol

IMTIAZ ALI KHAN Jan 10, 2017 07:43am

@Raj It is a shame on us that we fight all the times. Though knowing Pakistani Armed forces soldiers they sure are not suffering from food shortages, sadly though many people Pakistan and India do suffer from food shortages.

I pray that the day comes when our soldiers don't fight for point scoring for our political elites, especially Narendra hate mindset on both sides of the our houses. Watching this soldier speak from heart gives me pain. The soldiers are soldiers and I respect them beyond borders. God Bless Beautiful Pakistan and Bless our bigger brother Incredible India. Bus kardo yeh fighting yaaroon. 70 years have passed and we are still poor. Sab ka rab aik. God bless.

daljit singh Jan 10, 2017 07:49am

He is a brave soldier. He did not even spare his CORRUPT senior officers. I salute him. He is array of hope in the darkness of corruption. Facebook is a great platform to fight against corruption, injustice. More and more people should come out against irregularities in every sphere of our lives.

daljit singh Jan 10, 2017 07:55am

@Singh.ra The cut of the money goes up all the way to Defense Ministry. I salute this soldier . TRUE SOLDIER, PROTECTING THE BORDER and at the same time fighting the enemy from within

Faisal bajwa Jan 10, 2017 08:16am

Pakistan army should open up drop in centres on LOC to provide food to the destitute soldiers of the world's 3rd largest army.

thakur Sahab Jan 10, 2017 08:33am

@a Ali are you serious ?? 40% of india's population equals 50 crores approximately .so ultimately you want to say that 50 crores of india's total population live on roads ???

Waheed awan Jan 10, 2017 08:32am

Its true picture of emerging India. Whether it is not?

annnal singh Jan 10, 2017 08:40am

it is not army but BSF, like your rangers. And it cant be across the board, and may be an isolated incident. needs to be investigated and appropriate action taken.

Sidharth Nair Jan 10, 2017 08:46am

Let me clear the air a bit. 1) He is not part of the Army but the Border Security Force. Unlike the Army, BSF's leadership comes from the "regular police" which is known to be "super corrupt".

2) The Army's leadership purely consists of officers who are armymen themselves. This does not happen in the army since officers are taught to earn the trust of their men. This is because officers lead every battle.

3) The biggest problem with BSF and other Paramilitary is that- The police officers who form the leadership NEVER and I mean NEVER lead their men in any battle which is a complete shame. What ever this BSF soldier is saying is completely true here. Indian police system is very corrupt and superiors act like gods. Police is only fit to trouble the public.

NORISK Jan 10, 2017 08:55am

Half of the comments on Indian army show their lack of knowledge. BSF is a para-military force. Also, the last line - "Indian Home Minister Raj Nath directed the ministry of foreign affairs to submit a report on BSF" is incorrect. What does Foreign affairs ministry do here ? In fact, Rajnath Singh asked the Home Secretary to submit a report.

Desi Dimag Jan 10, 2017 08:58am

I was just talking to defence personals on this matter while working out in the park and they told Indian armed forces are very professional, never felt any discrimination against them and having all the elite facilities. If something wrong happened with his battalion the government will surely take a right measure.

AHA Jan 10, 2017 09:01am

Everything is fair in love and war. We can't expect class 1 treatment in places like war zones and himalaya trekking. Also this is result of corruption in low level which needs cultural shift to eradicate. Good that current government is putting process in place to curb such practices and these will be things of past soon. My sympathies to this chap.

Bharat Jan 10, 2017 09:06am

The most important line, that is Home Minister Raj Nath has asked to investigate this report is at the end of this report. It should have been mentioned at the start. Yes, there are problems, but things are being looked into.

Ishan Jan 10, 2017 09:15am

@pakistani i agree i am from India and i just want peace.

Ali khan Jan 10, 2017 09:33am

It doesn't matter whether he's Indian or Pakistani, the guy is serving his country be should be taken care of. I see so many people living on roads not having anything to eat in Pakistan and that too in cities like karachi and lahore so no need to feel happy or glorious for Indian soldiers condition we are no different.

Tuk Tuk Jan 10, 2017 09:35am

It is an eye opener. Govt. Has initiated enquiry and I am sure the issue will soon be ironed out asap.

Dr riffat jabeen Jan 10, 2017 09:57am

Provide life protection to this poor fellow and his family first for raising his voice against this exploitation and poor conditions. He is the voice of everybody else, he is not speaking for himself only. He showed the courage while all others are suffering to avoid more miserable circumstances. One becomes demoralised when he comes to know that he is suffering for irrational cause. They are being used to commit atrocities against innocent.

TechScribe Jan 10, 2017 10:39am

He should have tweeted to Modi instead of the video. Action will be taken.

South Asia Jan 10, 2017 10:49am

This is India ... the problem will now be solved super quick.

Shobhit Jan 10, 2017 11:05am

To all Pakistani individuals, this is BSF not the Indian Army, appropriate blame where it should, not to someone else. Indian Army is under MoD and BSF is under MoH.

Salahuddin Jan 10, 2017 11:18am

@Ali. checks the facts before commenting. That's not the case with Pakistan Army

Satya Jan 10, 2017 11:36am

I am glad in India one can raise an issue which brings attention. I am sure issue will be taken care of soon.

South Asia Jan 10, 2017 11:36am

@Shobhit BSF comes under Police

tamil Jan 10, 2017 11:36am

Jawans working in in Indian Army and BSF are taken good care and provided quality food as we report any problems directly to our CM Jayalalithaa , now we are without any support.

justice Jan 10, 2017 11:40am

I think the present government will take action immediately after it has come to the notice of the government by the soldier's video through the media and hence Indians hope justice will be done to the soldiers as soon as possible.

Agree Jan 10, 2017 11:39am

@Shobhit Agree army is under MoD(Ministry of Defense) is headed by defense minister Manohar Parikar and BSF is under MoH(Ministry of Home) and is headed by home minister Rajnath singh.

ningirsu india Jan 10, 2017 12:13pm

Shows our country in poor light, how can the govt, intelligence agencies protect our nation when they do not know what is happening within our army, Sad situation.

faisal Jan 10, 2017 12:57pm

Mr. Moodi buy some more weapons and feed your forces with those.

Namo Jan 10, 2017 01:48pm

@Ali khan well said.

point of view Jan 10, 2017 02:00pm

Solute to this brave soldier for bringing up issue of corruption in the armed forces. For soldier, it is easy to fight with the enemy than with his own people/system. Hope he will not be penalized for raising issues against his seniors.

deepu Jan 10, 2017 02:05pm

Proud to be indin and this soldier who raise voice ....... Atleast now our government wake up...jai hind

point of view Jan 10, 2017 02:09pm

One must note, the soldier has faith with the government. This is a big thing for the democracy that people's have faith with the elected government. He knows the government will do something to address that grievances,

Namo Jan 10, 2017 02:20pm

@django I find your comment deeply offensive a soldier is soldier doesn't matter whether he's Pakistani or an Indian .It is a matter of honour for these people to fight for and defend their country by calling Indian army third rate you are not only insulting them but you are also insulting your own army.I hope you reflect on the comment that you made.

Dilshad raza Jan 10, 2017 02:58pm

@deepu Feeding soldiers is a better thing to do. I guess it's hard to do when poverty is so widely spread.

d.k.pamnanI Jan 10, 2017 03:28pm

He has raised the question. Being in army, soldiers dare to say like this, He is brave soldier and has put his difficulty. There should not be any objection across the border.

Balwantsinh Rathod Jan 11, 2017 01:09am

@Al Fatmi i hope not but i am agree with yiu

Meow Jan 11, 2017 03:06am

A REAL BRAVE SOLDIER. well done to expose corruption in there -- let's see how Modi government finds fault lines in food curruption.

Ashok Jan 11, 2017 03:34pm

@PAKISTAN FIRST - Please read the new.. he is claiming the government is proving everything but senior officer is not provide.. it might be some extend true but government is take hard action on this video.

fantastic_idea Jan 11, 2017 05:35pm

well...that is pakistan and india.... poor countries, no money, so sad... and fighting each other...

adnan Jan 11, 2017 05:37pm

On both sides of the boarder it is only officers who are above certain rank who get all the privileges. Don't know about India, but in Pakistan based on the ranks military officers get residential, agricultural and farmhouse land on cheap price. While the non commissioned personnel lead a poor life.

Sardar suri Jan 11, 2017 05:58pm

Glad to see Yadav raise the issue. I'm sure it will be addressed and the Indian public who are big supporters of the armed forces will stand by the soldiers.

Nawaz the Thug Jan 11, 2017 06:30pm

Can Pakistan provide better nutritional food to these soldiers? After all they are humans.

Nawaz the Thug Jan 11, 2017 06:35pm

@Amar How can we help you from across the border? Pakistan can allow restricted border crossing to the starving Indian soldiers only for better food. Bravo to your advanced technology now the entire world is concerned and aware.

Ahmed Saeed Jan 11, 2017 06:39pm

@Nr Come to Pakistan and see how the soldiers are taken care of

Shahid Jan 11, 2017 06:59pm

@Ahmed Saeed I guess you still do not know the difference between BSF and Indian Army soldier. Read the comments abouve

taimoor khan Jan 11, 2017 07:41pm

Perhaps this can also be hushed up and brushed under the carpet, because the hyper nationalism that is grappling India doesnt allow these embarrassing episodes to come out in public domain? Quite astonishing though when India spend so much on defense!

Hamaad Jan 11, 2017 07:40pm

Poor Indian BSF soldiers should move back from Kashmir so that they can get some food.

Jk Jan 11, 2017 07:53pm

The roti looks quite good to me.

Mamta Jan 11, 2017 08:02pm

@PAKISTAN Thanx for the gesture.

Ahmed Saeed Jan 11, 2017 09:13pm

@Shahid Surely who knows it better than you.

KhwarAzmi Jan 11, 2017 10:30pm

I read he is missing now. Poor man. I hope the Indian Army do not torture him as they torture Kashmiris. Have some decency and let him go back to his family.

Dinesh gaur Jan 11, 2017 11:06pm

@harish jurel but unfortunately enquiry would be done by more corrupt offcr & result ..............

Sabeen Jan 11, 2017 11:14pm

@PAKISTAN why? When we have any problems do they help us?

Dinesh gaur Jan 11, 2017 11:29pm

@AHA power is corruption and power remains with offcr, everywhere.

Sauron Jan 11, 2017 11:37pm

@Imran Even if the Soldier is 'breaking discipline', the cause is valid. This has been taken up by the people . Unless action is taken , the govt will take a hit.

Dinesh gaur Jan 11, 2017 11:33pm

@South Asia according to the constitution of India, BSF is an Armed Force at par with Army, Navy & Airforce.

atif Jan 12, 2017 12:19am

that paratha is not that bad as he has portrayed.

kamal khan Jan 12, 2017 03:27am

@Ahmed Saeed can u tell us more how pakistan takes care of their soldiers?

Kam Jan 12, 2017 03:29am

Painful to see that both countries are wasting resources on security forces...

Sultan Mahmood Jan 12, 2017 05:26am

@SaeEd; Average Pakistani is much better then your gullibile comment.

Arun Jan 12, 2017 06:52am

@django says very well of your standard.

Raza Jan 12, 2017 07:33am

End of the day all (Ind-Pak) need to provide good education, food, heath service and better standard of living. Not sure this will ever happen with the leaders both country have. At the moment I don't see no hope with both PMs - not leaders.

Sohan Jan 12, 2017 10:37am

@django Whom are you comparing with?

Vvv Jan 12, 2017 01:48pm

@IMTIAZ ALI KHAN good comment I like it.

CommOn sense Jan 12, 2017 02:16pm
