NEW DELHI, Dec 21: Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Jamali on Sunday highlighted the vitality of the United Nations resolutions, saying these resolutions could not be overlooked.

“The basis of the whole solution lies in the UN resolution. That has to be kept in mind. You cannot overlook it,” Mr Jamali told NDTV.

President Gen Pervez Musharraf had earlier said that Pakistan was ready to set aside its demand for settlement of Kashmir issue through UN resolutions.

Asked what Gen Musharraf meant when he said the demand for resolutions could be set aside, Mr Jamali cryptically said: “When President Musharraf said ‘set aside’, he probably meant — yes, they have to follow.”

“The UN resolutions will be carried through. They have to come up,” Mr Jamali said, warning that if the UN resolutions were abandoned, it would make things “difficult to work” between India and Pakistan.

Some Indian analysts say that Gen Musharraf has not said anything new and that he has maintained that both sides could start by cancelling out ‘solutions’ that were unacceptable to either one of them, but this could only be done once the issue of Kashmir was put on the table for discussion.
