GUJRANWALA: Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) special court judge Naser Ali Nasim handed down on Thursday 21-year imprisonment and a Rs100,000 fine each to two people for sending a man to Greece in exchange of money. The man had drowned in the sea.

Convicts Asharf Iqbal and his son Ali Raza will undergo one year more imprisonment in case of defaulting the fine payment.

According to the prosecution, the convicts sent Amjad Husain, 31, of Naushera Virkan, to Greece via Iran and Turkey few months ago against Rs700,000. Amjad drowned on way to Greece when the boat, he was traveling in, capsized.

Also, the FIA arrested Arif and Khuda Bakhsh in Gujrat for human traffic allegations and seized 10 passports and six identity cards from them, FIA Deputy Director Khalid Anees said.

VISIT: Pakistan Railway and Archaeology Department officials visited on Thursday the old Gujranwala City Railway Station on the orders of the Lahore High Court (LHC) chief justice to preserve the historical building.

The team, consisting of Railways Director General Taimoor and Archaeology Department head Ayyaz Ahmad, met former MPA SA Hameed, Ashraf Bhutta, Babar Rizwan and Maulana Mushtaq Ahmad and leaned the railway administration wanted to demolish the structure to construct shops.

They suggested the station be restored to benefit the passengers. The team will submit its report to the chief justice on Jan 25. The LHC had stayed the demolition of the railway station on a petition by Mr Hameed.

COURT: Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Khuram Shabir Wasal handed down on Thursday death sentence to Arsalan Ahmad and life term to Akbar, Ashraf, Ziaullah and Asgher and a Rs200,000 fine each in a murder case. They will have to undergo six months more rigorous imprisonment if the fine is not paid.

The court acquitted Ameen and Asif of the charge giving them the benefit of doubt. According to prosecution, the convict killed Shakeel Ahmad over a land dispute in Wahando in 2013.

ACE: The Anti-Corruption Establishment ( ACE) arrested an excise inspector while receiving a Rs20,000 bribe from a goods transporter to release his truck.

Nadeem Ashraf had moved the Gujrat district and sessions court judge that Excise Inspector Moazam had demanded the bribe from to release his impounded truck.

An ACE team, under the supervision of judicial magistrate Sajad Ali, raided the scene and arrested the inspector.
