The Russian foreign ministry on Tuesday rubbished Pakistani media reports about 'secret negotiations' between the two countries regarding cooperation on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Reports circulating last week claimed that the Russian spy chief had made a visit to Pakistan in order to inspect the Gwadar port.
The reports alleged that Pakistan had formally authorised Russia to join the $46bn CPEC after the head of Russian intelligence requested to join the project.
"The Pakistani media reports about secret negotiations between Russia and Pakistan on the implementation of projects as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) are not true to the facts," Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation said in a press release.
Russia denied holding discussions with Pakistan on the possibility of joining the project.
"Moscow is not discussing the possibility of joining this project [CPEC] with Islamabad," the Russian foreign ministry said.
"Russia-Pakistan trade and economic cooperation has its own inherent value, and we intend to strengthen it," it said, adding, "Russian companies are implementing business projects in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, including the planned construction of the North-South gas pipeline from Karachi to Lahore, on a bilateral basis."

@ali Well said when we see the map of Asia few things pop up very clearly that easiest and only feasible access from India to Europe is via Pakistan which India is not ready to accept and while for Pakistan there are many other options available like via Iran which are well established and all feasible even via Afghanistan though easy but not so feasible due to hostile relationship between two countries. Time can change but geographic realities remain same Even if Afghanistan is not ready to be part even then Pakistan has options to be connected to central Asia via Iran or China. India has to face this reality that it can not be integrated to region without Pakistan obviously you cans survive alone and trade via SEA

Same is true again now at that time Pakistan was in American camp but now situation and India in USSR so Pakistan resisted influence of USSR in Afghanistan now situation is other way round. Everyone needs the subcontinent. The subcontinent includes Pakistan. It is not CPEC that is making Pakistan relevant. It's the other way round. CPEC is just one of the manifestations of Pakistan's relevance. This is what Russia says. It may have other projects in mind. Why the press release was so precise? Maybe to deny CPEC part only, or secret part only, or the joining part only, or the Pakistan part only. Maybe the negotiation are with China.

Those who says chabahar route is not feasible for India should know that 90% of world trade occur via sea route because it's 70% cheaper than land route. One more benefit of choosing chabahar route for entry in central Asia is-it goes through Iran which is peaceful unlike parts of Pakistan or Afghanistan which is insecure for trade.

This is not the first time Pakistan has done it. I don't understand what is the reason to do it in this manner that they name a country who will be denying that it is not true. Many times China has to deny news which Pakistan try to involve them. Probably Pak. Has no foreign minister who knows the culture and norms of foreign affairs. Terror attacks in Pakistan has shown downward trend. Otherwise Iran and Afganistan would not have evinced interest in CPEC which is also very important for Pakistan to surrender or compromise it's own interest to the threat of the terrorist.

The hype surrounding CPEC is so over blown that you would think the entire world is drooling with envy, and eager to be on the good side of Pakistan and China to be able to get a piece of the pie. More so than anyone was eager to see the reopening of the Panama and Suez Canals that are the maritime corridors between Asia/Middle East, and the North America/ Pacific regions.
Not even near! Anyone dreaming of CPEC transforming Pakistan into Dubai in the next decade is living in a fantasy land.

@Salim Khan My dear if you had paid attention to your teacher during the geography class you would have known that in order to use CPEC Russia does not have to cross 5 countries. they share a huge border with China and China is our next door. so its just a matter of 1 mutual friend and thats no problem So far as the Chah Bahar route is concerned it can never match the benefits offered by cpec because it saves plenty of time and the location of gwadar port is such that distance to the strategic ports in the gulf and else where are minimal. Moreover the main mode of transportation is ocean vessel for which the draft is the deepest at gwadar. I'm sure with the passage of time the turn around time for each vessel will also get reduced. so CPEC is more than an ideal project.

Russia want to create two economic zones, first is called North-South corridor which is not connecting Moscow to Mumbai through rail, road and water ways. It passes from central asian countries and then through Indian Arabian sea to reach Mumbai.
Another high aspired project is to develop a gas pipelines through China to enter India. This project is well on track and should be in reality in couple of months.

Sounds simple enough, but Pakistan has always had an inflated view of its own importance since the time Jinnah thought the world will woo the nascent nation only due to its self-declared "geographical importance". Later when the US hired Zia as its hired gun, this delusion got even stronger. CPEC and the fantasy of the riches it will bring is only the continuation of this mindset. South Asia geopolitical situation has changed. Russians and Chinese know that over the last few years India is siding west in particular USA. Its trade and military deals have upset Russians and Chinese. India is now relying more on west for its future business and therefore will always be under USA dominance and influence. on the other hand nexus of Pakistan china and Russia has become a reality. Despite Indian objections Russia went ahead and held joint military exercises with Pakistan which I think was more serious then Russians joining the CPEC. I can see India being isolated by its neighbors. World knows CPEC wil be a game changer and it's now down to India to try and be part of it rather an obstacle.
