Has ride-hailing company Careem launched a rickshaw service in Karachi?

The rickshaw ride option on the Careem app is something we haven't seen before.

Reports circulating on social media kickstarted speculation that a rickshaw ride service may be in the works.

On Monday we also found a rickshaw option among other ride options available ─ Wifi Cars, Business, and Economy ─ on the Careem app interface.

The development comes days after rival company Uber launched its rickshaw-hailing service, uberAUTO, in Karachi.

When contacted, however, Careem declined to comment on the matter at this time. There has been no official announcement from the company regarding the development either.

Careem entered the Pakistani market last year, launching its services in Karachi, Lahore and later Islamabad.

Within only a few months of their launch, mobile app-based car-hailing services Careem and Uber both became favoured modes of intracity travel for thousands of urban Pakistanis, especially women.

I think that the Government should not give license to Careem or any other company to come to a lower level of business, which may result in sacking the job from the poor. However, these giant companies may be allowed to operate Limousin and other taxi services, which are badly needed for Karachities in order to give them access to convenient mode of transportation.

@Jalbani Baloch You mean government should not allow anyone to provide better services at lower level, but encourage at higher level. Don't worry mate, they've listened to your advice long before it was formed in your mind. And all their efforts are on that direction only.

Jalbani, I believe you are not a common commuter using taxi / rickshaw. Careem / Uber has given a value options to common man which were ripped off by the local Taxi/ rickshaw on a daily basis. So please forgive us from your thoughts.

This service has really made my life so easy. Transport is just a click away, can't even think of my life without Uber. Further, I think Uber has currently the upper hand and has left Careem way behind in terms of availability, rates and service. And I am a big fan of Uber, they are very responsive and take feedback seriously. If you think they have charged you access money for your ride, if its true they would refund the same to you after confirmation. Love Uber....

@Jalbani Baloch We need a cheaper alternative not everyone can afford taxi service, especially students. There is no public transport system in karachi. Uber auto is heaven for me

Someone needed to break the Cartel formed by these Rickshaw/Taxi drivers, I have seen families struggling on negotiations with them and ended up paying upto their demands, the harsh reality is that they keep their vehicles in unhealthy conditions, care a damn about their customers, i think its high time for the citizens of Pakistan to stand up and demand their rights, one should at least get the level of service what they pay for.
