Fake welfare

Published September 26, 2016

I LEARNT about an army welfare association working in Model Town, Lahore, by the name Al-Sharazi Welfare Association, which works for the welfare of orphans and widows.

In order to meet their expenses they offer matrimony services, but the fee they charge goes to the charity. I visited their office on May 15 along with my friend who is looking for a suitable match.

It is an old building in Model Town. We met a man there who introduced himself as a major and a lady who was supposed to be an army doctor. The ‘major’ told us that the welfare association was working since the 2006 earthquake for the welfare of the victims.

My friend paid a hefty amount as donation but to my surprise the ‘major’ did not give any receipt. When I asked for it, he behaved rudely, saying that people came and gave donations in millions but never asked for a receipt. He also said that the amount we had donated was nothing compared with the amount donated by others.

I was persistent so he eventually had to give us a receipt. Later, he sent a photo of an army officer to my friend. The army officer turned out to be deceased. I feel that authorities concerned should take action against such fraudulent elements in society.
