China outgun South Korea

SYDNEY, Dec 4: China had one foot in the Champions Trophy women’s field hockey final on Thursday after their third win of the tournament against South Korea.

Meanwhile Australia and Argentina can both make the final after each team scored in the dying minutes of their match to draw 1-1, denying each other clear passage.

With four minutes on the clock, Peta Gallagher deflected into goal a drive from captain Katrina Powell to score Australias goal.

Argentina hit back and forced a penalty corner two minutes from time. Argentinas Soledad Garcia deflected the corner in at the left post.

China then opened their account when a strong pass then found Fu Baorong on the right backline, who in turn found Tang Chunling in front of goal to beat Lim Ju-young at the right post from a metre out. The attack sent China in ahead at half-time.

China effectively finished the contest 12 minutes from time when Chen Qunqing scored off a rebound.

Meanwhile England played their best hockey of the tournament to register a 1-0 victory over the Netherlands, their first ever win in the Champions Trophy.—AFP
