SRIHARIKOTA: India on Sunday became the fourth country to successfully test launch a scramjet engine, The Hindu reported.
The test flight, which represents a milestone in the ISRO's efforts regarding its future space transportation system, took place at the Sathish Dhawan Space Centre launch pad.
The purpose of the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) experimental mission is the realisation of an Air-Breathing Propulsion System that utilises hydrogen fuel and oxygen from the atmosphere as an oxidiser.
The scramjet engines help reduce launch costs by cutting down on the amount of oxidiser which needs to be carried along with the fuel.
An ISRO official told Indian news agency IANS that the two air-breathing engines hugging an Advanced Technology Vehicle rocket normally start breathing air when the rocket reaches a height of 11 kilometres.
The ISRO said, "With this flight, critical technologies such as ignition of air-breathing engines at supersonic speed, holding the flame at supersonic speed, air intake mechanism and fuel injection systems have been successfully demonstrated."

I am very impressed with Dawn's news reporting. I check Dawn's site several times a day since the latest news gets updated here before any other site. I also find that Dawn's reporting is unbiased and balanced and far better than any of the papers from India. E.g. the news about the scramjet engine has not made it to any other international paper yet. In comparison, BBC has become a bit of a joke - BBC has not updated its page on Asia for the past 4 days and some of its news is over 10 days old ! Keep it up Dawn ! You are the best !

Please read Para-4. It is given there that the new technology would reduce launch costs. It seems only hydrogen will be stored and carried in the vehicle. Oxygen from the atmosphere would be utilized as oxidizer.

India is not the fourth but just the third country to successfully test the Scramjet Engine, the other two being USA and Australia. Using this engine can dramatically reduce launch costs by reducing weight and increasing efficiency.
Eventually, the aim is to place this new rocket alongside the Re-usable Launch Vehicle (RLV) which India successfully tested a few months ago to make rocket launches more affordable. Currently it costs around $20,000 to send one kg of matter into space.

it has huge Military potential which is why Govt. of India deliberately kept this happening with little or no fanfare. Russia was first nation who became successfully developing Scram Jet technology followed by US. Scramjet engine principles have been known for a very long time. These are much simpler than even the simplest jet turbine engines that power modern aeroplanes. There are no moving parts inside the engine. The challenges are in the high temperature materials and the gas flow dynamics. However, the main point is that this is not a space launch technology at all as the engine needs supersonic speed to ignite. Thus in this demonstration it rode strapped to normal solid boosters and only on reaching the required high speed at 11 km altitude the scramjet started functioning. It cannot be started from the ground or even at lower altitudes. After 11 km it can work for only a limited distance before the air becomes too rarefied that there isn't enough oxygen for scramjets to work. this is the reason why no one used it for space launch functions. It is purely a military technology for air-breathing multi-Mach supersonic missile systems. But that role is very hard to demonstrate.

To people staring this is waste of money: every gram of weight in space cost lot of money. Any technology that reduces weight of the rocket propelling satellite or space shuttle leads to big savings. Market for space launches is worth $20 billion dollars a year and India is trying to increase its share. Therefore this is a smart move.
More income = Less poverty.

I have been part of ISRO for limited time and let me tell you where these scientific advancements are being used.
It helps us to develop our own GPS System which is functional now.
These satellites help us monitor and predict environments which help us to generate early warnings to help poor farmers using TV and radio.
Some 2 years back Orisa, India state faced a tsunami like Chennai faced some decade back but loss of life at orisa was just some couple of people while at Chennai we lost thousands brothers and sisters.
We monitor drought, flood and even traffic and terrorist activities can be monitored using satellites. Uttarakhand faced a cloud burst and ISRO already generated warning about it but political actions were not taken. What after disaster?
In India, we have NDRF which takes action in case of disaster so how they take action? All roads/rails and airport are destroyed so ISRO tells the way by real time monitoring and also warn for future stroke.

Did I forget to tell you that Scramjet technology can be used in any flying object which uses fuel.
The biggest concern for flying object is its weight and a huge amount of weight comes from its fuel.
It can be used in Commercial flight as it is an alternative to oxygen they have to keep in liquid form to burn fuel.
If fuel weight is less then you take extra payload and that a big big commercial benefit.
It can be used in missile system and again payload amount will be high.
Obviously, to reach up to missile and a commercial flying machine part, it will take time as it needs to be updated and test for above-mentioned areas.

India is 4th after US, Japan & France/Europe in developing such engine, China is not there. But we are behind all of the former in earnings in this field and stands 5th. There was a proposal for common satellite for SAARC nations. Pakistan should support it, knowledge has cementing power.

@Jaffar The Indian scramjet project has no collaborators. India has collaborated with Russia to produce Brahmos supersonic cruise missiles. With Israel and France for the avionics of Su 30 MKI. It is collaborating with Russia for the 5th generation fighter aircraft and with Israel it tested Barak 8 interceptor missile. Moving forward India will collaborate with the US on building aircraft carriers.

@Kumar The standard of education has improved a lot. That is why, we see our QS rankings improving. Question is, should we invest more on existing engineering colleges or open new IITs? Govt. is doing both.Under Dr M M Joshi, the budget on education was increased from 2.5% of GDP to around 4.5% of GDP keeping target of 6%. Multiple IITs are just reflection of this.

Also in 1965 there were only few from major cities who could compete leaving away all the discrimination, today student from all over India belonging to every community competes with only few more colleges increased as compared to 1965. So actually today the competition is exponentially high as compared to 1965. The point here must be brain drain, not the quality.

my cousin worked on the scramjet engine inlet - he is a doctoral student of IIT chennai! proud of him.
He is like a firewall, wont speak much, will not show emotion, like a robot. But he was happy and smiling after the success, so I understand how difficult this is - rocket science...

India is actually the third or fourth Nation - definitely well after the US, Russia and may be after the European Space Agency Consortium - to have credibly demonstrated this technology. India would take another 3 to 5 years to have a credible scramjet for the commercial launch purposes.

Currently no country flies its rocket powered by a scramjet engine, even the countries that have done the scramjet atmospheric testing successfully are all in some advance stage of testing phase.

@Shah Kashmiris have more rights than other Indians. No Indian can buy land in Kashmir. They can buy land and come and settle anywhere in India. They get a larger share of the taxes we pay than my own state Karnataka which is a massive contributor to economy. Kashmir valley contributes only 30 per cent to the GDP of J&K while the remaining 70 per cent comes from Hindu majority Jammu and Ladakh. If it were left to ordinary Indians we would have freed the south Kashmiris, cut funding and let them run their own.

Good for India. This will create more scientific jobs in the economy. Not only ISRO, but it's 200+ supplier SME companies will also generate jobs for science and engineering graduates. India has already providing outsourced satellite launch to around 25 countries including US, Germany and Singapore. This will help it to get business, wealth and jobs from more countries.

Dear long back DRDO prime, Mr. Saraswat has told that India has achieved the tech. to launch beyond 10000 K. Missiles but don't wants to because, It doen't server our objectives. similarly, if needed we can use Hypersonic tech for dual purpose, but why is the only question.....

@IrfanM Nice but senseless comparison. China has ranked third in Olympics medals tally and UK second. But none have so many global CEO's as India. None have highest number of engineers working in Google, NASA, Intel, Microsoft etc. China has population more than India but they have not produced as many global CEOs as India has. So its win some loose some. Try something else friend.

Fast forward today, India is global-hub of small cars and two-wheelers, employing millions of people. Today Indian auto-makers like Tata, Mahindra, Bajaj, Hero motors are selling vehicles in America, China, Japan, China/Korea, South Asia. Australia...

US will not give any of their technologies to India... So that India is not collaborating with US in scientific as well as defense research fields...
Then Russia... Russia have given many technologies to India... And also we have joint venture in defense research... They gave technologies to develop missiles as well as jets...
But the scramjet technology will not be from Russia,,, because Russia's scamjet technology have some difference compared to India's scramjet technology...

@Mustafa R. Brahmos is currently using ramjet... Not scramjet... So that Brahmos's is super sonic and speed is only 3 Mach... Brahmos Corp. is building Brahmos 2 which will use the scramjet and it can make brahmos hyper sonic,,, of speed 6-7 Mach...

India has already received orders for launch of 68 satellites out of which 12 are for an American company. Further India would be manufacturing 2500 satellites in the next 10 years for various purposes. Good going India.

Janab what I am saying that it's good but one should priorities things, we can't just give a lollipop to your kid that "Beta look at our experiment" after this experiment will be able to sell it others and than we will be able to bring food, health, education and justice...
Make some sense and open your eyes... Ask them to provide necessities first to the masses than go for this sort of experiments..

Remember, SCRAM jet is a dual technology.
That means it can be utilized in missile technology as well..
Supersonic Cruise missles like "BRAHMOS" which currently fly with a MACH 25 -to- 2.8 ( speeder than Sound), with this new technology INDIA can make hypersonic missiles which is MACH 5 or even 7 .
