FAISALABAD, Dec 3: Four constables were suspended from service while a show-cause notice was issued to the Sargodha Road SHO for their involvement in a newsmen torture case here on Wednesday.

ASP Muhammad Naeem in his preliminary interrogation found constables Yousaf, Ibrar, Maqbool and Mumtaz guilty of torturing the staff of weekly Ayubi and raiding their offices.

A police source said the show-case notice had also been issued by the DPO to Sargodha Road SHO Jamshed Chishti for his negligence in tackling the matter.

A police team had intercepted two students Jamshed and Faqir Hussain on Nov 22 and allegedly demanded illegal gratification. On their refusal, the policemen tortured both of them publicly. They also tortured weekly reporters Abid Nawab, Yasir Nawab and Muhammad Naeem and shopkeeper Zahid when they intervened. Later, they took newsmen and the shopkeeper to the police station and further tortured them.

The Faisalabad Union of Journalists brought the matter to the notice of the police high-ups who ordered the inquiry. The medical examination of the victims had already confirmed torture on them.
