PTI wants Japanese cartoon series 'Doraemon' banned

LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf on Wednesday submitted a resolution in the Punjab Assembly calling for a ban on popular Japanese manga and anime series Doraemon.
The resolution urges Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) to ban cartoon channels in general, and Doraemon in particular. Submitted by PTI lawmaker Malik Taimoor, the resolution also suggests limiting the hours of cartoon channels.
It is not clear from the resolution what PTI's issue with Doraemon is, but it said channels exclusive to cartoons were having a "harmful impact on children".
"Cartoon channels on 24 hours are having a negative impact on the educational and physical well-being of children," read the resolution, which is likely to be discussed in the next assembly session.
Without giving any details, the resolution said: "The language that is used in the cartoons is destroying our societal norms."
However, talking to Dawn.com a PTI spokesman said the decision to submit the resolution is Taimoor's own initiative.
“It is not party policy, Malik Taimoor from PTI Rawalpindi initiated it,” said PTI office bearer Mian Mahmood while talking to Dawn.com
Mahmood added that Malik is under the impression the cartoons air throughout the day, and have been “dubbed in the Indian language”.
“There should be specific timings. Foreign culture and Indian language are having a great impact on young children who are impressionable,” said Mahmood.
“We do not want a ban, just controlled timings,” clarified Mahmood.
Soon after the submission of the resolution, #PTIvsDoraemon became the top trend on Twitter in Pakistan.
Doraemon's plot revolves around a robotic cat named Doraemon, who travels back in time from the 22nd century to aid a pre-teen boy named Nobita.

I have two kids 6 and 3 years old and we have already banned it for our kids due to extreme negative impact on my elder son. He has started weeping like Doraemon over small things and we have seen total improvement once he stopped watching it. We highly recommend Disney Junior and Baby TV for kids.

I do agree with readers that cartoons and video games have a very strong impact on kids' minds- much more than many adults can imagine. The time should not go beyond 6 pm and cartoons should be screened b4 broadcasting (some cartoons meant for teens/adults e.g. Clarence could be broadcasted on a separate channel or in late timings).
Games that show our cities (with extreme fights and killing vs terrorists) should be banned/discouraged.
Dubbing should only be allowed in Urdu and local languages.
Once again, cartoons and games (in foreign languages) have a much more deeper impact than we think.

As you rightly said Japanese kids are never affected because their parents are not affected. Here more than kids the parents are affected due to religious eyes the watch and assume kids will be affected. I have watched Doraemon along with my kids, I see no reason for ban on it. It's quite entertaining and moral for kids

exactly, myself I witness as a teacher, really students going to an fantasy world where they need to live with Doremon, and an important thing is that most of children show their desire to have doremon for get everything. Never thought I'd say this but good move. I remember watching Dragon Ball Z, now that I've grown up, I wont suggest anyone to let their children watch it, for certain reasons that is.
However cartoons like Burqa Avenger should be encouraged by all means. Seriously, my baby sis started paying attention to studies after watching a few episodes of it. Furthermore, Cartoons with Hindi Dubbing should be banned. As they promote Hindu culture and their pronunciation. Not that I have a problem with Hindus, its just that our children should be taught about our culture.

@PUNE-INDIA As far as Hindu culture is concerned, any objection from that perspective is ludicrous since cultures do derive from religions but only partly, not predominantly. As far as language Urdu and Hindi are concerned while they both have very common vocabulary; tone and pronunciations vary widely and Urdu when incorporated in Hindi, it sounds way too much phonetically degraded.

What's the problem with Hindi language? Learning a new language should always be taken as a positive thing. I'd love learn Marathi, punjabi, Kashmiri, Urdu etc in the future. Don't forget Urdu is an Indian language too.
And as far as the cartoon is concerned, we adults are no one to comment on it. If children find it funny, let them watch and enjoy it. Don't snatch away their childhood.

I cannot comment about the content of this cartoon as I haven't watched it but find it strange that instead of this political party raising its voice against cartoons, dubbed or otherwise, it should have (in its tenure so far in the province it governs) carried out exemplary changes in the curriculum, high standard of interesting content for children in the textbooks, established at least one educational cum entertainment radio and television channel only for children (it's a bit different than forcing only morals down children's throats), raised its voice against all the rights of children getting violated in this country, and then, after all that track record behind it, come out against a particular cartoon or all the other cartoons 'destroying our social norms'.

First of all I admit that "Doreamon" is quite addictive not only for children but adults also, besides too much air time on a channel with repetitive transmission you can't ignore to watch it. For children it leaves Impact more negative less positive, Yes, Time wasting, Yes, entertaining, Yes but Ban is not the solution. You may restrict the timings let say an Hr or two but Banning it is not a real solution.

Doraemon is extremely popular in my kids and even I watch it for hours when there is nothing to do. The problem with this cartoon is the main character Nobita a pre teen kid is almost solely relying on his robotic friend Doraemon for everything. He is not interested in putting in efforts for completing his assignments, sports activities or for any other daily chores. The guy has no respect for competitive and hard-working initiatives. Instead for everything he asks the robot for gadgets which are paramount in getting the job done. These kind of lethargic and insensitive characters could only generate negative tendencies in young kids

@Kailash Singh even Indian kids were not adversely impacted at all. On the contrary, my 5-yr old nephew who is a big fan thinks it is his duty to protect his mom when she is at home alone. Gives us a good laugh but atleast his heart in the right place. Although viewing hrs should be limited, else children won't get any physical activity outside and become couch potatoes!

Cartoons have a great impact on children, agreed. But terrorism and extremism has a greater and more harmful impact on them. When will you start taking notice of the actual issues in the world? As to which cartoons are good to watch and which aren't, can come through formal and informal education. Just like cigarettes, they are available everywhere but not everyone smokes. Mr. Malik should watch the movie "Thank you for smoking" and then divert his enery towards trying to solve some real problems.

As far as most fans should be concerned, Doraemon is practically banned in North America for several reasons:
When Viz Media, the licensor, reviewed the mangas in the first place, it turned out to have large amounts of crude humor and perverted moments, so they refused classification.
Same thing for the TV series. When I looked at many episodes, they appeared to have content that would be beyond inappropriate for younger viewers.
As a result for #1 and #2, Doraemon never aired in most English-speaking countries.
That meant the only way fans could watch Doraemon is by downloading the episodes. However, on November 2008, nearly ALL Doraemon videos were taken down from YouTube for copyright.
To today, there are NO Doraemon DVDs selling in the North American market.
Thus all of this proves why Doraemon is banned in the US.

Nobita boy is in love with shizuka girl.
This cartoon is seriously not good for young kids. There are many episodes in which are on romantic note. In one episode Doraemon turns nobita room in beach and nobita invites shizuka. And they both wear swimming costumes in that episode.

These days mothers prop up their days old babies in front of baby TV with out understanding the consequences of this exposure. Children need physical activities, educational and relaxation for their overall growth just watching hindi dubbed cartoons is a pit in which we are throwing our kids. Way to go pti

@Farooq. I have to agree with you. Disney Junior helped my children learn a lot of things, in fact I think their spoken English is much better than me now. They eventually grew out of it, now they watch other things. What's important is controlling their TV time. I never let them watch TV at night, and late afternoons are for outdoor activities, not TV.

@sameer Watch at most four episodes and you would have at least one episode where the story would revolve around how Nobita would try to impress Shezuka, or would try to put a spy cam in her room or even below that. For a pre-teen this is not the right time to have these types of storylines.

Yes, these cartoons must be controlled. Children waste their summer holidays and weekly offs just watching Doraemon and this thing leaving bad impacts on their health mental caliber and social life. The most annoying thing is the attitude of nobita, always crying, coward, asking for help.

if you provide good quality Children entertainment programmes/Parks/sports , most of the children will be automatically disinterested with such cartoon channels. For many children, cartoon can be the only entertainment media. Depriving them from their only entertainment programmes can be cruelty to children too. Parents too have greater responsibility to give restricted access to such channels. Become yourself a child to mix up with your child and try to understand their psychology. But don't forcefully deprive their favourite channels. This could make them more frustrated.

I am one of those people who have been complaining about airing of Doraemon since forever despite being a cartoon lover. Other than the usage of Hindi language the cartoons are promoting children whining about problems, finding short cut to sort every issue and laziness. But this resolution has not presented any clear point on the basis of which they want to ban cartoon channels. the statement that we want controlled timing for cartoons, I really believe that it is the responsibility of parents. the first step should be airing of cartoon channels broadcasted from Pakistan and yes their are cartoon channels on-airing from Pakistan but the cable transmitters are broadcasting Indian channels which is a much bigger issue considering the local myths, hindu culture and religious based cartoons they on-air. Changing the county form where channel is being broadcast would provide a better control over content. So first the more severe issue should be addressed and resolved.

Firstly, the reason why the children are watching such cartoon is because our govt. is not broadcasting any childrens channel of our own! See Tv has just recently alloted a time slot for kids on their channel. Otherwise there is no such channel which shows quality programmes for kids

This is nonsense. What empirical evidence does PTI have? None obviously. One of those shameful and silly things that only our assembly members can come up with. If PTI is so concerned with cartoons, then perhaps they should build more parks, playgrounds, and safe neighbourhoods where girls and boys can do go out and play in. Banning cartoons is NOT the solution.
The only thing we should ban is the BAN mentality.

I y totally agree and here are the reasons why. It is a pathetic cartoon and teaches negative stuff only. the protagonist, Nobita is shown as a lazy and impudent kid who cries and shouts all the time. he does not do any work n always relies on Doremons unrealistic gadgets to get his work done. it promotes hatred for homework and playing tricks on parents and teachers. it should be banned.

I do't have much issue with Doraemon but there are other cartoons which have been dubbed in such a bad language which is not acceptable at all. Cartoon such as Oggy and the Cockroaches which have no dialogues, yet they have been dubbed in a language, which even the Indians call it a "tapori" language. Teachers of kinder garden have launched complaints that children are using the words of tapori language in class rooms. Exposure to the outer world is good, but it should not be at the cost of your's future generation.

Also, many parents no longer give any attention to their kids and they just simply put cartoons for their kids to watch which is affecting the kids negatively. I have seen many kids who wont even eat anything unless they have their favourite cartoons running in front of them. I have also seen kids not mingling with each other as they are busy playing games on their ipads. To me this is pathetic.

@Kakashi I have watched it. What PTI is saying is that cartoons must only be aired at a specific time so that children would spend more of their time on things that is more useful. I think its more with parenting as now a days parents do not give attention to their kids and it seems like parents have come to a conclusion that the only way to control kids is through TV or ipads which to me seems pathetic. I think banning stuff does not solve our issues. Also, this is not a PTI policy but a policy of an individual who happens to be from PTI.

The thing is if doraemon is getting banned on the reason that it is in Hindi and playing with brain of children then why not they ban Indian dramas which are using pure Hindi language and are full of their culture and traditions moreover they are full of taking revenge destroying family relations and much more,just think about that.
