KE and discos

Published July 26, 2016

I STUDIED the special report, ‘Plunged into darkness’ (Images, July 17). I observed commonalities in both entities as far as loadshedding is concerned.

The question arises as to how to overcome this glaring issue. The answer is to adopt latest techniques such as smart grid technology, trained human resources, correct billing, untampered energy meters, curb on ‘kunda’ connection and tapping all available resources in the form of hydel, coal, fossil fuels, nuclear and renewable energies to their peak capacities. It appears that 40pc line losses also include all above-cited malpractices.

In order to arrest these malpractices, there must be a dedicated team of engineers and technicians who must be imparted adequate on-job training covering supervisory control and data acquisition. After having trained technicians and engineers, chances of power breakdowns can be minimised. According to reports, KE needs an additional 400 MW to make Karachi free from loadshedding.

Similarly, each distribution company can evaluate its shortage in power and explore avenues to overcome this issue. As regards recovery, I am sure the government can make recoveries without any political point-scoring.
