HYDERABAD, Nov 29: Sindh Abadgar Board president Abdul Majeed Nizamani has expressed the hope that the province will meet its sugar production target of 1,200,000 tons.
Talking to Dawn by telephone from his native village in the Tando Mohammad Khan taluka on Saturday, he said harvesting of sugarcane crop was going at full swing and sugar mills had started issuing indents to growers.
He said he had visited almost all sugar mills of Sindh and added that except for one or two mills, the mills would become operational in a couple of days.
Mr Nizamani said according to his estimates, the sucrose recovery would surpass 9 per cent.
Referring to the price of sugarcane, he said although the minimum price had been fixed at Rs41 per 40 kilograms but it was only an indicative price as mentioned in the relevant notification. He hoped that growers would be paid more than Rs41 per 40kgs.
NON-PAYMENT OF DUES: The former employees of the Zeal Pak Cement Factory and former employees of the SRTC continued their hunger strikes on Eid day and held protest demonstrations on Friday outside the press club against the non-payment of their outstanding dues.
The former employees of the Zeal Pak Cement Factory have not been paid their golden handshake amount as cheques issued to them by the factory administration were not honoured by the bank.
The former employees of the SRTC have not been paid 15 per cent mark-up as envisaged in the written agreement signed between the defunct CBA and the Sindh government.
