RAWALPINDI: British High Commissioner Thomas Drew CMG calls on Gen Raheel Sharif at GHQ on Friday.—PPI

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan is opposed to using proxies against other countries and will also not allow any other country to use proxies against Pakistan, said Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Raheel Sharif while speaking at the National Defence University (NDU) in Islamabad, according to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations on Friday.

Gen Sharif’s address focused on the internal and external security situation of the country and his vision of an enduring peace within Pakistan and the region. While addressing students, the COAS emphasised Pakistan’s resolve and determination to confront the global phenomenon of terrorism and extremism and cleanse Pakistan of this menace.

He said that during Operation Zarb-i-Azb, the Pakistani nation had emerged as the most resilient nation. Dilating on the progress made in the concluding phase of Zarb-i-Azb, he explained how they had transited from hardcore kinetic operations to intelligence-based operations and now combing operations.

He added that defeated terrorists and their sympathisers, inland and abroad, were frustrated and going for soft targets. Remaining steadfast and with an enhanced awareness and participation, he said, “we as a nation must pursue our national objective of zero-presence of terrorists and total peace at any cost”.

“The contours of future wars are fast changing. While our enemies are stoking terrorism to demoralise us and destabilise our country, we are united, fully determined and capable of defeating their nefarious designs,” he added.

Earlier on arrival at the NDU, Gen Sharif was received by NDU President Lieutenant General Nazir Ahmed Butt.

Separately, British High Commissioner Thomas Drew CMG called on Gen Raheel Sharif at the GHQ on Friday. Matters of mutual interest and regional security were discussed.

Army should convince its own civilian government about its policy. Whenever Civilian govt has taken any step towards peace with India it was scuttled by Army using their own proxies.

I2t Jun 25, 2016 02:33pm

Thanks of you have learned the lesson after 30yr of your own proxy wars in the region. Never too late.

Ehsan Jun 25, 2016 03:26pm

Now these ongoing counter insurgency measures have pledged the country to use proxy means in order to oust the belligerence of neighboring states. Bitter reality is that the proxy means are always needed to quash the foreign aggression of enemies behind the curtain. And sometimes proxies are needed to execute the plans of national security and stability, And also to neutralize the foreign deterrence or more precisely for self-defense. So in a nutshell, proxies are viable remedies sometime to pursue the goals of national interests and to neutralize the enemy's deterrence. In order to counter the foreign involvement in destabilization and attaining the goals of enduring peace in the region, proxies could be a batter option. Unless and until it remains a proxy and the reality is not unleashed at the international fora, this unleashing could lead to the isolation of the state and could disturb the foreign policy goals.

Farooq Khan Jun 25, 2016 03:32pm

its seems rarely in actions

Pakistan opposed to using proxies against other countries: COAS

Has Pakistan taken a copyright for the use of proxies?

P. S. Natarajan Jun 25, 2016 04:29pm

I think it is high time that the COAS be made ex-officio deputy PM and the defence minister of Pakistan. When the ambassadors call on him and he gives statements about Pakistan's national and international situation, they appear to be issuing forth from no less than either a head of the state or of government. In this connection, the appropriate protocol can be reformulated.

Iftikhar Husain Jun 25, 2016 04:39pm

This is a very positive statement.

sal jiwani Jun 25, 2016 04:49pm

Sir, We all appreciate your action and would like to request you to little bit attention of Karachi situation and Lahore where Pakistani were killed by government and no action is taken, the prices of daily use is high rise in sky, innocent Pakistani are killed in daylight on street, no Law enforment personal present and not any local or federal government office present.

I request you Sir, please get rid of all dirty Politician, Murderer in street, police and so on.

Pakistan opposed to using proxies against other countries: COAS

Should this statement be believed? There seems to be no change in Pakistan's foreign policy.

Usman Jun 25, 2016 05:45pm

Great words by COAS our enemies need to understand and review their hostile attitude towards the state of Pakistan and accept CPEC with open heart.

Instead of propagating negative against it.

Raja Farhat abbas Jun 25, 2016 05:47pm

@Rohit Just here to make snide remarks as usual i see !

Usman Jun 25, 2016 06:14pm

@sahil no more kulbhushan yadav this is the message .

shahzad Jun 25, 2016 06:19pm

Mohammad Zubair Jun 25, 2016 08:34pm

Then why are Quetta, Kuchlak, Pishin, teeming with Afghan Taliban???

TechnoKraft Jun 25, 2016 11:11pm

If others ARE using proxies openly, then Pakistan must use them to openly to secure a position of strength and balance of power

Sri1 Jun 26, 2016 12:22am

@Harmony-1© "although world already knows about our high values and policies, nothing wrong in reinforcing once again" Exactly, world already knows about the 'high' values and policies, no amount of reinforcing will convince them.

Manu Jun 26, 2016 01:10pm

You started the proxies business - now you want others to end it. Stop and others will reciprocate

p r sharma Jun 27, 2016 02:11am

Hypocrisy and COAS are synonym.
