GUJRAT: “Bab-i-Gujrat” along old GT Road near Chenab river bridge has been built at a cost of around Rs10 million.

Ruling party lawmakers Nawabzada Mazhar Ali Khan, Ashraf Deona, Shabeer Kotla and Gujrat District Coordination Officer Liaquat Ali Chattha inaugurated the project at a ceremony held at the site late on Wednesday.

It was initiated as a public-private project two years ago when the then Gujranwala commissioner and present Punjab Additional Chief Secretary Khwaja Shumail Ahmed had launched the projects of establishing such gates in the six districts of Gujranwala region.

The gates in Sialkot and Wazirabad tehsil had already been completed in 2015. These gates would also depict the local art, culture, trade and industry through designing and painting.

These gates are being established with the financial support of businessmen. The cost of Bab-i-Gujrat has been borne by Amjad Farooq and Abid Farooq, brothers who are related to furniture industry. The district government provided the technical and other support.

Speaking at the ceremony, the DCO announced that another such gate on the entrance from Rawalpindi side of the city’s old GT Road would be built as part of city beautification plan.
