Chief Selector Inzamam announces 21 probables for English Test series

Pakistan Chief Selector Inzamam-ul-Haq on Wednesday announced a list of 21 probable cricketers for the English Test series kicking off on July 14.

The Pakistani side is to have five openers, seven middle-order batsmen, seven fast-bowlers, two spinners, and two wicketkeepers.

Pakistan players for skill camp:

Openers: Mohammad Hafeez (subject to fitness), Sami Aslam, Shan Masood, Khurram Manzoor

Middle-order: Azhar Ali, Younis Khan, Misbah ul Haq, Asad Shafiq, Iftikhar Ahmed, Asif Zakir, Akbar ur Rehman

Fast bowlers: Mohammad Amir, Rahat Ali, Imran Khan, Sohail Khan, Junaid Khan, Ehsan Adil, Wahab Riaz (subject to selection)

Spinners: Yasir Shah (subject to fitness), Zulfiqar Babar

Wicketkeepers: Sarfraz Ahmed, Mohammad Rizwan

Pakistan 'A' players for skill camp:

Openers: Sharjeel Khan, Farukh Zaman, Jahid Ali

Middle-order: Saud Shakil, Babar Azam, Umer Siddique, Abdur Rehman Muzammil

All-rounder: Mohammad Nawaz

Fast bowlers: Hasan Ali, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Abbas, Azeez Ullah, Bilawal Bhatti

Spinners: Mohammad Asghar, Shadab Khan

Wicketkeeper: Mohamamd Hasan

The national side is currently undergoing physical training in the Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul.

"I discussed the training schedule with the trainers in Abbottabad and I think if such a camp is organised again for a longer period of time, it will help a lot," Inzamam said.

The two-week-long training course is scheduled to end on May 28 after which the players will be given two days of rest, he said.

"The week-long skill camp for the England tour will run from May 30 to June 5," the chief selector said while addressing a press conference at the Pakistan Cricket Board headquarters in Lahore.

Pakistan Test opener Ahmed Shehzad and Test middle-order batsman Umar Akmal have been axed from the tour. The two have come under fire for their disciplinary issues.

Too few spinners in the squad, maybe add one from amongst 1) Abdur Rehman 2) Muhammad Asghar and 3) Muhammad Nawaz to back up Zulfiqar Babar, in case Yasir Shah fails to recover. Khurram Manzoor, Sohail Khan, Bilawal Bhatti have repeatedly failed and in their place they should have people like Fawal Alam and Sadaf Khan.

Why Fawad Alam, Baber Adam, Muhammad Nawaz are not part of main team. Is Harris Sohail still unfit?What on earth he got injured for that's taking so long to get back. Great injustice to Fawad Alam. He has s phenomenal domestic record but still consistently ignored by the selectors. Besides his batting he is a very good fielder and a useful left arm spin bowler. Please do not waste him. He should be a backup for Misbah and Younus. Please select him for the England tour.

Asif Zakir? at the age of 33 with a first class average of 35. Just a couple of hundreds in the bellow par first class matches on dead wickets and you are ready to play for Pakistan and that too in England? On the other hand, the fittest of all and with the best averages (57) in our cricket history, Fawad Alam is no where to see. It is just astonishing the way Pakistani selection procedures work.

I wonder why Fawad Alam, Babar Azam, Muhammad Asghar and Muhammad Nawaz not in the team? Khurum Manzoor, Sohail Khan, Imran Khan are just too ordinary to represent at international level specially in difficult conditions of England. Everyone is screaming about Fawad Alam, it has been years when he shined and continue to do well consistently, can bat at any number, can bowl, good fielder and a very good runner between the wickets...but somehow is still out...Can Inzi (the most unfit cricketer ever) explain why ?

What was the use of fitness camps when most of the un-fit players are selected. Hafeez, Yasir Shah, Zulfikar Baber. Why Iftikhar and Rizwan, they have never performed well despite given so many chances. Fawad Alam, Mohammad Sami are two players who could have done well in English conditions. Anwar Ali didn't even made it to the skill camp.

Test team should be: 1) Sami Aslam 2) Babar Azam (plays as opener in domestic cricket) 3) Azher 4) Younus 5) Misbah 6) Asad Shafiq 7) Sarfaraz 8) Aamir 9) Sohail Khan 10) Yasir 11) Junaid They should take Sadaf Husain instead of Ehsan Adil, Mohd Asghar instead of old Babar Azam, Fawad instead of Asif Zakir and Mohd Nawaz instead of Akbar Rehman for the test team. Inzimam was a good batsmen, never an inspiring captain and now not a good start as a selector.

I thought that Inzaman would be fair, but looking at selection, it surprised me, as he left out Fawad (whose average and fitness is better than all players playing for Pakistan), and God knows who else Inzamam led selection committee may have left out on basis of biases, or personal like and dislike, ignoring merit. Can understand that he may have left players on basis of behaviour, but here I can see that even behaviour is fine. I think Fawad should move out of Pakistan and try to spend few years playing in another country, so that he can get qualified for any other country.

You are selecting likes of iftikhar Ahmad and dropping guys like Umar Akmal and Shahzad isn't fair. Big politics to include some parchis.. In fact it's the time to treat both with some respect. I am very upset with this decision.. And you will see bad effects in limited over cricket.. In fact they haven't got better than Shahzad in test too. Pakistan will suffer without these guys.

@AMIR AHMAD: it is not that Pakistan do not have good and fit players. Only problem is that they are not of right ethnicity or province, and since selectors of Punjab cricket board are selecting Punjabi team, borrowing one or two players from outside. I do not mind if all 11 players are from Punjab, but to ignore players from other provinces even if they are good players (like Fawad, better batsman than all, and in past Sarfraz, and many others) and in place select third class players with first class batting averages around 30, like Hafeez, Shahzad, Shoaib Malik, Akmal brothers, etc, than discrimination, partiality, biases, like/dislike and nepotism becomes obvious. Today, players from outside Punjab are selected for cosmetic purpose. Same is happening with government jobs and development programs. Actually, I have stopped seeing cricket team as Pakistan team, as it is Punjab team. So, good luck. People from outside Punjab feel alienated and thus damn care.

@KARACHI WAALA I never understood why Asim Kamal did not play in the Pakistan team as a regular? This is because I still remember how gutsy he was when with a broken hand, he scored 97 against India in a Test match and provided amazing resistance thus saving national pride. Such gems are rare. By the way, I am from Lahore.

Once again Merit has been sidelined by the PCB for the upcoming England cricket series. Consistence performance, best fitness level (topped the Army fitness camp wth Shan Masood), average of 56.71 in domestic, but still ignored due to political influence, yes he is none other than Fawad Alam. I had the confidence in Inzi (as the chief-selector) but he has named players who were even used by their own teams (i.e. Akbar-ur-Rehman), and the favourite water-boy for Misbah with 52+ BOWLING average is selected due to his all-round abilities (do I even need to name him).

@Jumz Fawad Alam failed miserable against Bangladesh. The wickets in England will be far more difficult to bat on than what he played on in BD and failed. So, while I think Inzi looks like a Taliban (and frankly I'd like to see them exterminated), his selection is well thought out. Recent form on Pakistani conditions counts for nothing if the potential player does not have the skills needed to succeed in foreign and especially the English conditions.

Poor decision to not select Fawad Alam - he should be selected purely on Merit. Good decision to drop Umar Akmal and Ahmad Shahzad - Afridi's influence has badly affected thier game and personality. Try Khurram manzoor once more but because he lacks technique, James Anderson in English conditions will be unplayable for him.

o peoples don't make hype for Fawad Alam or else let me remind you that these 21 probables are for English Test seriese ( clearly mention in article ) not for odi so where Fawad will stand in test team because pakistan team has much more settled test side. no experiment is requied in test side .Fawad Alam , Harish Sohail and Babar Azam technically correct and also deserve a a place in national team but firts in odi and than in test

I am about to purchase tickets for Boxing Day test match between Australia and Pakistan - if team selection for the tour is going to be similar to the one for England tour, I think I should be prepared for being thoroughly disappointed and embarrassed - I am sure none of PCB members have to go through the same shame otherwise they would have decided to select team on merit long time back

Fawad Alam has to improve as a international cricketer... he is not one day player,, but he can survive in test cricket after improving his cricket,, he also have very short short selection, you can not survive in international cricket having this kind of ability

Looking at Inzamam no one can guess he is the chief selector!! I think he is a smart guy and realised till the time he looks like this, no one can throw him out of PCB in pakistan. Smart move! It is important in pakistan to look pious to keep the job!

@Aurangzeb Niazi: If Inzamam has valid reason for dropping Fawad, other than nepotism, biases, provincialism, partiality, discrimination, parchi or jealously, than why not give the answer, that all can accept as logical? For instance dropping Fawad whose fitness is better than all players, fielding is recognised as one of the best amongst all Pakistanis, and averages in all forms of cricket (first class or limited overs) is higher than every Pakistani ever played, that means all Pakistani batsmen who ever played for Pakistan since 1947. Well, even Strike rate is better than most Pakistani players. He can even bowl if required. Fawad is best amongst Pakistani lots (one of the best in the world) who can rotate strikes at will (has complete control over his batting and sends the ball where he can easily make singles). He is middle order batsman, still he was given chance abroad as opener. He made century, and scored highest runs in that match, still he was dropped soon after.

@ALI: Fawad is first Pakistani who made century on debut as opener in away match, used to have highest average in ODI (recently, went down, still average is over 40, better than most Pakistanis), has better strike rate in ODI as well as test, than most Pakistani batsmen. So, how can you say that he is not good at international level, when he was not given chance to play? ... He made century in his first test match abroad ... scored highest total runs in that match, but dropped soon and was only given 3 test matches, that all not continuously.

@shahbaz from India: Actually, Pakistan best deserving test cricketer and also ODI cricketer is Fawad but discrimination, nepotism and partiality kept him out of test cricket. His first class average (domestic test cricket) is around 57. That is the highest first class average of any Pakistani player, Second is of Javed Miandad (Ave 53). On the other hand, most of Pakistani test players have first class average below 40, some even got into team with average below 30. This is called Pakistan where nepotism and provincialism rules, alienating people, and result is Bengal becoming Bangla Desh. Just imagine, when BD was part of Pakistan, Pakistan did not gave any chance to Bengali players, today they are kicking the back side of Pakistan and could soon be a better side than Pakistan.

@Rahul: All players play domestic cricket. If they were better than Fawad they would have had better average than Fawad, right. Unfortunately, none even come close. Most Pakistani players have below 40 average in first class, when Fawad averages 57. Fawad is middle order batsman, still he was given chance as opener in test. As opener, in his first test, when all team players collapsed, Fawad scored 184 runs in 2 innings (168 in second innings, that was century on debut match) and first century by any Pakistani batsman on debut abroad. Second highest total was by Younis Khan who made 82 in two innings. None made even 50 in two innings of that match. Result? ... Fawad was dropped from test and since then he played only 2 more test.

I would still swap Iftikhar with Fawad in a heartbeat. Our middle order is well established and I don't think Iftikhar will even get a game but Fawad needs to be in test side. Good to see Asghar and Shadab in A team. Asghar was very good in PSL while Shadab was very good in U19 WC. Azhar needs go open in England with ball swinging way too much.
