KARACHI: King Faisal Bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia yesterday emphatically declared that the people of his country considered the sufferings of the people of Pakistan as their own and would “stand by them in one line”.

Replying to an address of welcome at a colourful civic reception held in his honour in Bagh-i-Jinnah last evening, at which he was conferred the Freedom of the City of Karachi, the great Muslim monarch emphasised that the relations which bind Saudi Arabia with Pakistan “are based on most sublime, spiritual and heavenly bonds”.

Lustily cheered by the distinguished gathering which included President Ayub Khan, Central and Provincial Ministers present in Karachi, members of the diplomatic corps and prominent citizens, the Arab leader said: “They are unlimited bonds which are not affected by any material consideration.”

He said the people of his country had brotherly feelings for the people of Pakistan. He prayed to God Almighty to give His blessings to efforts made to strengthen this brotherhood, cooperation and solidarity “in the interests of all of us and in the interests of all Muslims”.

He offered his sincere thanks for the love and hospitality shown to him in Pakistan, and remarked that the generous people of Pakistan were well reputed for their good manners.

He also conveyed to the people of Pakistan the greetings and good wishes of “your brothers in Saudi Arabia”, and said: “They are your brothers and have the same feelings for you as you have for them.”

King Faisal was presented with the key of the Freedom of the City of Karachi, along with a copy of the welcome address, in a silver casket by Mr M. Ziaullah, Vice-Chairman of the Karachi Municipal Corporation.

Earlier welcoming King Faisal on behalf of the citizens of Karachi Mr Ziaullah said: “Friendship with the Arab world is a part of our faith”. He said: “The visit by the monarch and his entourage has sent a wave of joy throughout the country.”
