KARACHI: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has suspended its deputy director Mir Ausaf Ali Talpur after he and his wife were booked by police for storming into a beauty salon, beating up its staff and ransacking the entire place while suspecting salon workers of stealing her gold chain.
His service has been suspended till the completion of an internal inquiry by a NAB committee that has been tasked to look into the incident and recommend action if he is actually found guilty of violence, according to the orders issued from the NAB headquarters in Islamabad, said a source privy to the development.

“If the internal inquiry doesn’t find him guilty, he will be back in his office,” added the source.
“The internal inquiry is conducted by NAB officials themselves. It’s nothing new as in the past several internal inquiries were conducted against NAB officials for different complaints lodged by different individuals and institutions.”
However, he preferred to stay silent when asked about the fate of those internal inquiries conducted by NAB in the past against its officials and chances of Mr Talpur’s coming out clean after the inquiry despite the fact that the footage recorded by the CCTV cameras installed at the salon showed his men storming into the facility.
In another video most probably recorded through a mobile phone that went viral on the social media, his wife Hina Khan is shouting at the salon staff and threatening them it could “cost them heavily” as they “don’t know who I am”.
The Sharea Faisal police had registered an FIR on a complaint of the salon owner against Mr Talpur, his wife and other officials reportedly belonging to NAB under Sections 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees), 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), 395 (robbery) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

It's a criminal prosecution case and both guards and owner should file against wife for assault. This case should be referred to the court and this internal NAB inquiry is just to cover the case for few days and then people will forget.

Interior minister Chaudhry Nisar is requested to take notice and punish the guilty even if they manage to force an out of court settlement because these indiciduals have tarnished the image of a national institution and of Pakistan.
If if the NAB official is found not guilty by the inquiry committee then the police men have acted on their own and must be punished.

Another "Talpur" influence. First reports on TV channels were that he has been terminated. Now the news is he is suspended until the internal inquiry is completed by NAB officials (which would be none other than his subordinates, as he is deputy director). Who would dare to go against him. So the outcome of the inquiry, despite incriminating video proofs, may not go beyond a penalty of Rupees 50 "under Sections 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees)". "Democracy" will be the winner!!!

Internal inquiries are cover ups, used to intimidate the aggrieved party and to pressurize them to come to a settlement, otherwise be ready to face consequence. Media and civil society should remain vigilant in this case and ensure that this official is punished for his acts at least by termination of service. I hope that his assets will also be looked into because these sort of people are inherently corrupt.

Misusing the state machinery for settling private disputes by a NAB official shows how empowered he might have felt within his own organization, or the extent of power available to him and others by sheer default. Next time, he or his family are engaged in road rage, traffic-constable halt-up, denied boarding by an airline, or overbilling by KESC, imagine what will happen. Can DG NAB Sindh tell us how does he plan to control this?

Every other citizen of Pakistan, would have been arrested, tortured, insulted and dragged through the streets by the security personnel. Because this couple believes that they are powerful (why would the women otherwise warn people in the salon "you don't know who I am"). This is typical of people in positions of power in Pakistan. Incidentally, none of these people in power are in their jobs because of their expertise or skills set and therefore, they have the feeling of being invincible. Sadly, none of this is new to Pakistan and Pakistanis. My guess is that nothing will happen to them and they will go back to their old ways in a month or two, when everybody will forget the incident. Let us see what happens.

NAB only took the case cited because there is a video recording. There in no guarantee that justice will be served. In any other country the NAB official along with the police officers who ransacked the salon would have been dismissed immidiately with such an evidence. The investigation should be done by an independent body not NAB themselves and strict laws should be drafted for such incidents so they're not repeated.

very sad state of affairs that officers of law enforcement agencies prove himself law violator. If saloon staff had on at fault, complain had been reported at nearby police station against them instead of taking law into their hands. This time again inquiry officer of NAB shall give clean chit to his junior colleague. In our country law is made to implement on poor and oppressed class of societies people and every time bigwigs are escaped their skin. the available video on record depict their wrongdoing despite of it what type of evidence is required.

People with money and links, and officials all think that they are above the law and when confronted with a situation like the NAB official faced they become ruthless without thinking of consequences.
