GUJRAT: The University of Gujrat (UoG) administration has changed the name of the varsity’s main library to Quaid-i-Azam Library from its earlier name — Dr Nizamuddin Library.

The library, which had been inaugurated by former VC Prof Dr Nizamuddin (now serving as chairman of the Punjab Higher Education Commission) just weeks ahead of his retirement back in September 2014, was named after him in recognition of his services to the newly-established varsity during his two tenures spanning eight years (2006-14).

The syndicate at its recent meeting had decided to name the library after the Quaid-i-Azam and removed the name of Dr Nizamuddin from the library building as well as the varsity’s official documents just ahead of the convocation in February last.

UoG Vice-Chancellor Dr Ziaul Qayyum said the name of the library had not been approved by the syndicate and it was not a personal property of any official.

He said the syndicate had approved its name as Quaid-i-Azam Library.

The syndicate had also approved the names for the varsity’s academic and residential buildings and roads of the Hafiz Hayat campus.

Dr Nizam claims the decision to name the library after his name was taken by a syndicate meeting in 2014 on the proposal of a senior faculty member.

A senior official at the UoG told Dawn that the syndicate’s approval of naming the library as Dr Nizam Library was missing from the minutes of that particular meeting but he was present there and could confirm that the syndicate had discussed the proposal of naming the library in the name of Dr Nizam.
