KARACHI: Sindh health officials have confirmed the death of a total of 143 children aged up to five years in Tharparkar district because of malnutrition and other causes since October last year.

In a report compiled by the health department, the death toll during the last month has been put at 40.

The official figures show that 31 children died in October, 28 in November and 44 in December last year.

The report said that a total of 2,599 children were admitted to hospitals and dispensaries in the districts over the past four months.

Besides, more than 28,000 children were examined at the outpatient facilities.

MITHI: Meanwhile, unofficial but reliable sources insisted that the death toll during the month of January alone was a little higher than the official tally of four months.

They reported the death of seven more children in the district on Tuesday taking the toll in 33 days to 155.

Five of the seven deaths were reported by their parents from Sonder, Gundi Sama and Ouner villages near Nagarparkar and Malkan village adjacent to Chhachhro town while a two-year-old girl and a newborn died at the Mithi Civil Hospital on Tuesday.

A country where metro buses are runing on the roads and orange line projects is being completed, but the children of the country are dying due to food scarcity. shame on our government.

M Jamal Feb 03, 2016 10:34am

Can't we find the terrorists and their facilators who killed these children.

Justice Feb 03, 2016 11:05am

@M Jamal It's the CM of Sind who is responsible for killing innocent children, PPP have money to spend on unnecessary luxury, but they don't have money to feed hungry children of Tharr.

Shiva Feb 03, 2016 11:36am

Very serious matter...

ZAIDI, Iqbal Hadi Feb 03, 2016 11:50am

143 is negligible figure but had it been 1143 then perhaps health minister would have taken notice of the situation so from that point of view don't be panic now and wait till deaths count touches 1143. Iqbal Hadi Zaidi

@M Jamal Excellent comment.

Note that most deaths reported in Mithi Hospital are of newborn babies (babies dying within one month of birth). These deaths are not due to child's malnutrition; about half of these deaths are due to neonatal sepsis, which can be prevented by applying Chlorhexidine gel on the freshly cut umbilical cord. Chlorhexidine is not available in Pakistan, and federal drug regulatory authorities have prevented its import from Nepal, which supplies this drug to a number of developing countries at very reasonable prices.

Please, let us keep records straight!

@ Asif Hussain Shaikh is it Sindh government responsibility to respond after 143 innocent live or someone else, since fed gov't & sindh gov't engage into a tussle of Ranger power matter. I am wondering how could this matter will be solved without intervention!!!

Bystander Feb 03, 2016 12:49pm

Who is going to take responsibility of this ???

india_first Feb 03, 2016 12:56pm

Huge difference between official and unofficial figures. This speaks about systemic failures which is sign of failing state.

irfan Feb 03, 2016 01:29pm

@M Jamal Yes go and get Zardari

Pankaj Feb 03, 2016 01:47pm

While government busy spending billions for CPEC but no value for human life.

javed Feb 03, 2016 02:40pm

Another star in the PPP governance cap in Sindh.

Usman Feb 03, 2016 02:58pm

@Asif Hussain Shaikh

The metro buses and orange line projects are in Punjab. The PMLN Punjab government is responsible for them.

The Tharparkar district comes under the jurisdiction of the PPP Sindh government. Do not blame the Punjab government for the incompetence of the Sindh government. The Punjab government and the PTI KPK government are working for their people. What is the PPP Sindh government doing? Have you heard of any heatwaves in Lahore killing a 1000 people or people in Multan dying from starvation?

Blame your PPP Sindh government and their 'blind' voters for this tragedy.

Justwasif Feb 03, 2016 03:34pm

@M Jamal They are our selected honourable leaders..

Justwasif Feb 03, 2016 03:35pm

Is there anyone who call a strike?

niju Feb 03, 2016 06:14pm

compare Indian and Pakistani thar.........Sind govt should take lesson from Indian officials and find a way to sort this issue.

Muhammad Arshad Feb 03, 2016 07:02pm

Such a sad news......, can't we do something about it?

Zak Feb 03, 2016 10:27pm

Why is Nawaz Sharif, Zardari and Qaim Ali Shah not in court, sued on behalf of these children who are shaheed due to negligence of these indifferent corrupt leaders.

Shaharyar Latif Feb 04, 2016 03:23pm

@Muhammad Arshad yes we can do a couple of things like....

  1. Creating awareness among family, friends & offices...... 2.Collaborate with Organizations in generating financial & non financial support...... I know one organization named "team Karachi".......
  2. Instead of spending a 1000 buck on a McDonald, we might choose to send it to our brothers & sisters in need.

The only way to feel the pain of others is to imagine oneself in it. Works for me.

Shaharyar Latif Feb 04, 2016 03:32pm

@Usman

Pakistan is one country & everyone one of us is responsible for each other because we are Muslims........ Regardless whatever the govt has planed to do, we should as citizens & brothers of the people in Thar create awareness using any medium in our offices, schools, homes & all the people living around us.

This is not on the priority of the govt niether this nation.... i have not seen anynews on any TV show..... I have only seen frequent Q Mobile Adds, Pakistan Cricket League & disgruntlement between the provincial govts........ It time that we play our part in what ever way we can.
