‘Kohli fan’ held for hoisting Indian flag in Okara

OKARA: The Saddar police on Tuesday arrested a man for hoisting the Indian flag at the roof of his house at 54/2L village.

Led by information, a police team raided 54/2L village on Monday night and found the Indian flag at the roof of Umar Draz’s house. Umar got wind of the raid and escaped but police arrested him after some time.

Police registered a case under section 123-A of PPC and 16 MPO.

The detained man told the media that he was a fan of Indian cricketer Virat Kohli and also had photographs of the cricketer pasted on the house walls.

He said he now realised that he had committed a blunder by hoisting the Indian flag.

As an Indian, the only reason I started to like the uncouth, rude and mannerless Delhities again is because of Virat Kohli and his fighting spirit. What is a big deal of hoisting a flag, twenty years ago we used have Pakistani flags flying in our Muslim Mohallas when they won against India.

@Sheryar Junaid Hoisting a flag of another country is the right of diplomats of that country only. It has nothing to do with India rather it has to do with international law and procedures. He would have been held even if he had hoisted Chinese flag because a house or a building with a foreign flag represents a consulate or embassy of that country.

If hoisting an India flag is an illegal act in Pakistan then the offender should be apprehended and suitably warned or fined according to the applicable law. In India too hoisting the Pakistani flag is illegal whereas one can hoist flags of other countries freely. In my apartment complex, I regularly see Spanish and German flags during European championships.

Let the relation get normalized please! There is no harm in hoisting Indian flag it is out of respect and shouldn't mean that India has occupied Pakistan. It is very common world over, in world cup 1996 lot of Pakistanis were carrying and hoisting flags of Sri Lanka in Lahore and Karachi! no big hassle is respect!

Both India and Pakistan need to grow up. In America, my next door neighbor has a permanent Canadian flag because they are Canadian. However, on 4th of July and Memorial Day they also host the American flag side by side with their Canadian Flag. Mexican flags are visible frequently here and there. Other day, while driving, I saw a white man was driving a car, and had an Indian flag back of his car and saying "I love India." But looking at him I can tell that he is an American by birth. This thing should be considered okay as long as they are not anti-nationals.

What a contrast. In Pakistan an innocent cricket fan of an Indian cricketer booked for hoisting Indian flag where as in India especially in Kshmir and Kerala hoisting Pakistani flag is very common. Some time even elected law makers hoist Pakistani flag to keep their vote intact.

I think arresting him is a bit much, though just because he likes Virat does not mean he has to hoist the Indian flag. Also we do not want to do what the Indian Government has done by beating up and detaining Kashmiri students when they played with firecrackers after Pakistanis win over India, we have to try and show more tolerance. P.S: Virat is far greater than Sachin, the greatest ODI batsman of all time, in time the Indian community will realise how silly they were in raising Sachins status so much.

@arup People get arrested in Kashmir for waving Pakistani flags, nothing new to it, besides Brazalian or German flags are waved in Pakistan too during football season, however it's a different case with the kind of relations India & Pakistan have, I'm sure Indian police will arrest/question you if you wave a Pakistani flag on top of your house and vice versa.

Foreigners are used to celebrating their events like flying US, UK, Israeli and other flags all over India - this is a person's right. Ironically, Indian constitution for a long time did not allow people to hoist the Indian flag during non-national days in the fear that they may disrespect it !! And I am sure that there may be strict rules even today.

Before 1947 people of India,Pakistan and Bangladesh used to hoist "Swaraj flag"(selfrule flag) on their roof tops to show solidarity for freedom struggle against Britishers by lowering the British flag and hoisting the Swaraj Flag.After 1947 India-Pakistan partition India and Pakistan had separate flags hence Indian and Pakistani flag hoisting was not allowed across the border. After 1971 Pakistan-Bangladesh partition Bangladesh and Pakistan had separate flags hence Bangladesh and Pakistani flag hoisting was not allowed in Pakistan and Bangladesh respectively.

@Ali Kamal It is a big deal because both countries see each others as enemy. You can not hoist enemy's flag & avoid hurting sentiments of people around you. He wouldn't have got same treatment for hoisting a Japanese or Korean or New Zealand's flag. This is true for both India & Pakistan. While citizens of a country enjoy freedom of expression, it should not hurt sentiments of other people & hence infringe on freedom of other people.

I hope the time will come soon when it won't matter if the flag is of India or Pakistan and people on both sides will realise that there is much more that unites us than divides us. I also hope there will be a time when governments will not be able to fool people on both sides of the border and people of Pakistan and India will treat each other as brothers and sisters. @Shahzad Ikhlaq in Kashmir people are caught for throwing pallets and stones and not for flying Pakistani flag... These are totally non law abiding citizen, showing a flag india does. It mean breaking any law.. Do you have such law in Pakistan than state and give reference to that law..

@Omar Same here. i do support pakistan team whenever they play against other than India. I find many in India doing the same. But somehow both pakistan and Indian teams have lost their sheen in last few years and people lost interest

The relationship between India and Pakistan is like immature couple who just had a break up.... who get furious over any small thing that reminds them bout their past, but still deep in the corner of their heart, they hide a desire to get back to normalcy. Guys you should better get matured. Both are now being laugh-stock in front of the world.

It would have made more sense had he hoisted picture of Kohli and if at all a 'flag' then that of the Indian cricket team i.e. Blue color etc. Why the tricolor I wonder -- either he is really brainless (foolishly that is) or it is some mischief... And how does one get an Indian flag in a place like Okara Punjab anyway?

a simple question to all Indians, Pakistanis and Asians..we love football too but we are incapable continent when it comes to football, except for Korea and japan doing some semi-final stuff once each in Fifa world cup and a few middle east countries like Iran bringing some glory... if Pakistan or india somehow somewhere in time reaches the finals of a Fifa world cup against lets say Germany or Argentina, I am willing to bet that 100% of the combined 1.5 billion pop of the 2 countries will support the team that reaches the final

Is it a crime? What is the position of law in this matter? I am in a foreign country; and here nobody stops me from hoisting the Pakistan flag.. The constitutional / legal position needs to be clarified.And if it is not a crime to hoist a foreign flag , THEN the S.H.O. must be questioned and restrained.

@Hammad Haider International law??? where did you get that? In Canada, people from different countries hoist their own countries flags in their Home and that too with independence, put on your car or wherever you like

Look Umer Draz is a villager,who loves Kohli,loves cricket,he may be freed with warning. Just recently he got news that PM Modi who is Kohli's guardian comes without invitation to attend Wedding function at PM Nawaz home, he inadvertently hoisted flag of Modi's country. Since his flag hoisting action is sport related,besides he thought PMs of both countries are too close,he did the mistake. He may be pardoned with warning.

An innocent gesture by a cricket fan. Even if he has broken the law, he should be let off with a mild reprimand. I remember continuously hoisting the Congress flag on top of my house in 1945-1946 at Lahore but the police of the day laughed it off after tweaking the ears of the young boy, poor me.

Is it a crime to show love for another country with which we are at peace? As children we used to wave flags of Turkey and Iran to welcome their delegates. The flags were provided by a Pakistani dictator's government.
