Published November 6, 2003

KARACHI, Nov 5: The Physiology Department, Dow Medical College (DMC), in collaboration with the Anaesthesiology Department, started a training programme in “Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation” (CPR) for some 300 students of MBBS first-year professional here on Wednesday.

The programme, jointly initiated by Prof Shoaib Tauheed of the Physiology Department and Dr Saida Haider of the Anaesthesiology Department, under the supervision of DMC Principal Prof Tipu Sultan, aims to enable medical students to tackle emergency situations in the absence of necessary gadgets as facility for oxygen.

“Students will be provided with theoretical information about CPR, taught the cardiovascular system and gain practical experience at the “skilled lab” of the Anaesthesiology Department under the guidance of senior teachers,” Prof Shoaib Tauheed told APP.

The DMC, which is soon to be upgraded as a medical university as per the directives of the Sindh governor, in its endeavour to establish its credential as a seat of higher learning is taking due care to inculcate among its students all the relevant skills prerequisite to support patients in need.

“This is being done within the available resources and infrastructure and no extra expenditure will be incurred,” Dr Tauheed said adding that the training programme might be gradually expanded to provide first-hand exposure to CPR to all MBBS students.—APP
