ISLAMABAD, Nov 3: Wah is to stage two events of next year’s 9th SAF Games, Lt. Gen Abdul Qayyum, chairman POF Board said on Monday.

“We have been allotted two events by the SAF Games organising committee one of which is wrestling while the second one could either be taekwondo, karate or kabaddi,” Qayyum said following a ceremony to honour the POF’s women athletes who won medals at last month’s National Athletics Championships in Rawalpindi.

Wah had earlier been given the right to host the wrestling competitions of the SAF Games which could not take place in March this year.

The Games which were later rescheduled for March 29 to April 7 will feature 15 disciplines that also include athletics, badminton, boxing, football, kabaddi, rifle shooting, rowing, squash, swimming, table tennis, volleyball and weightlifting.

Qayyum said that Wah had good sporting facilities and staging two disciplines of the SAF Games would see these venues being upgraded further.

Earlier Qayyum gave away cash prizes to athletes who earned POF eight gold, seven silver and eight bronze medals in the organisation’s maiden appearance in the National Championship.

Sumera Zahoor created a new national record in the 5000m while Noshee Parveen set a fresh mark in the triple jump event.

The following athletes were awarded prizes:

Sumera Zahoor (5000m gold NR, 1500m gold, 800m silver, 4x100 relay gold, 4x400 relay gold), Bushra Parveen (400m gold, 200m silver, 4x100 relay gold, 4x400 relay gold), Nazia Butt (shot put bronze, discus throw bronze, javelin throw bronze), Mehwish (hammer throw bronze), Saddaf (10,000m fourth position), Sajida Ramzan (800m gold, 5000m silver, 4x400 gold, 1500m bronze), Noshee Parveen (triple jump gold NR, long jump silver, 100m bronze, 4x100 relay gold), Fozia Aurangzeb 100m hurdles gold, 400m silver, 200m bronze, 4x100 relay gold, 4x400 relay gold), Rozina Shafqat (triple jump silver, high jump silver, long jump bronze).
