PESHAWAR, Oct 31: Pakistan People’s Party (Sherpao) MPA Sikandar Hayat Khan Sherpao has said the arrest of a politician is unfortunate, but his actions were against national interests.

The opposition is respectable, but it should not cross certain limits in furthering personal enmity which would be detrimental to national security, he stated.

In a statement here on Friday, he deplored that the PML-N leader had turned politics into personal enmity and the manner adopted for settling scores with the government by furnishing the image of a sensitive institution had resulted into unrest amongst the masses.

Mr Sherpao said his arrest was not a desirable thing, but Javed Hashmi had crossed all limits in personal vengeance. The detained leader had put the national interests at stake for the sake of petty political motives, he said.

He said the defamation of the armed forces at the moment when India was threatening Pakistan would be disastrous to the national interests.

He contended that politicians while tackling such thorny issues must observe maturity in their thoughts and actions and we must give precedence to the national interests over political and personal ones.

Sikandar Sherpao said it was the democratic right of the PML-N stalwart to criticize the government, but it was unfair to defame the institution of army under the garb of freedom of speech.—APP
