ISLAMABAD, Oct 28: The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) on Tuesday announced its support to the Punjab lawyers, who are observing a strike on Wednesday to protest against the demolition of lawyers’ chambers on the Fane Road, Lahore.

PBC Vice-Chairman Qazi Mohammad Anwar criticized the demolition of the chambers allegedly under instructions from the Lahore High Court administration.

The Lahore High Court bar has given a call to its members to observe a strike.

The LHC, Rawalpindi bench, Bar Association, and the Rawalpindi District Bar Association resolved to observe the strike.

The LHC chief justice, through an administrative order on March 21, had ordered about 50 lawyers to vacate their offices as the court had purchased from the Evacuee Board in 1995 the land on which those were located .

The lawyers approached the Supreme Court, but withdrew their petition after it was argued by Punjab Advocate-General Shabbar Raza Rizvi, representing the LHC, that it was not maintainable in the apex court.

Mr Rizvi stated on Tuesday that no petition with regard to the chambers controversy was pending in the Supreme Court. The 10-day period for approaching the appropriate forum had expired, he said.
