LAHORE: Supermodel Ayyan Ali has approached the Lahore High Court, seeking acquittal in the currency smuggling case against her.

In the appeal filed through Advocate Sardar Latif Khosa, she challenged an order of the Rawalpindi Customs Court which had dismissed her acquittal application on Nov 6. The trial court had already indicted Ms Ali in the case.

The appeal said that the customs intelligence department had arrested Ayyan Ali in a fabricated case of money laundering and kept her in ‘illegal’ detention for four months but failed to establish the charges.

It said the authorities accused the model of violating a State Bank’s circular about currency smuggling, however, it was not necessary that every citizen had knowledge about it, the appeal added.

Ms Ali has asked the court to set aside the impugned order of customs court and acquit her being innocent.
