‘Dead’ man wakes up minutes before post-mortem in India

MUMBAI: A homeless Indian man who had been pronounced dead woke up on an autopsy table, shocking hospital staff who were about to begin a post-mortem, authorities said on Tuesday.

Police in Mumbai said they found the man, who has not been named, unconscious and suffering from multiple infections on Sunday morning and took him to the local hospital.

A doctor at the Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital certified the man as dead and sent the body for autopsy, Ashok Dudhe, Mumbai Police deputy commissioner said.

“As the autopsy was about to begin, the man awoke triggering chaos after which the doctors rushed to the room. Then they snatched the death certificate from my staff and tore it up,” Dudhe said.

It's suspended animation. It is scientifically accepted and reported condition. The signs of life are not detectable, but person is alive. It is not necessary that the doctor who declared patient dead is negligent.

A number of such cases are coming up these days. Scientists & doctors should come up with a solution to avoid such happenings around the world. In some cases a rigorous method should be adopted before pronouncement of death.

He was wrongly declared dead, but he was alive. Negligence from authorities is being investigated and culprits will be punished. They may even lose their job or heavy fine and/or prison is possible.

About a month ago, it wass reported that a woman believed to be dead 'came back to life', when Edhi mortuary staff were bathing her body prior to burial. In her case, it was presumed that she was not checked by Doctor to certify that she was clinically dead, but in this case of Indian man, the man has been certified to be dead by the Doctor, and surprisingly, he came back to life within minutes before his autopsy. It is nothing but a rare case of revival to life, probably without blaming the Doctor.
