Iranian Revolutionary Guards say general killed in Syria

ANKARA: An Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRG) General has been killed near Aleppo, where he was advising the Syrian army on their battle against the self-styled Islamic State (IS) fighters, the Revolutionary Guards said in a statement on Friday.
The IRG said General Hamedani was killed on Thursday night and that he had “played an important role in reinforcing the front of Islamic resistance against the terrorists”.
“Brigadier General Hamedani was martyred by Daesh terrorists during an advisory mission on the outskirts of Aleppo on Thursday afternoon," said the statement read on IRNA, using an Arabic acronym for the group.
It didn't provide any further details.
Iranian lawmaker Esmail Kosari said Hamedani helped coordination between Syrian armed forces and the voluntary forces in their fight against the Islamic State (IS).
“For years, Hamedani played a very important role in Syria as an adviser, he played an important role in preventing the fall of Damascus. Then he returned home at the end of his assignment,” Kosari told the semi-official Tasnim news agency.
“He returned to Syria for a few days because of his deep knowledge about the area and he was martyred in Syria.”
Hamedani is one of the most senior Guard commanders to be killed in Syria, and the second to be killed this year. He was a veteran commander who had an important role in Iran's 1980-88 war with Iraq.

In January, Brigadier General Mohammad Ali Allahdadi was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Syria that also killed six Lebanese Hezbollah fighters.
Iran is one of Syrian President Bashar Assad's main allies. Tehran has provided his government with military and political backing for years and has kept up its support since Syria's insurgency began in 2011.
Guard commanders repeatedly have said Iran only has high-level advisers in Syria, denying it has fighters there.

it is a good move that Iran has publicly accepted its military intervention now in Syria. Iran has the right to protect its strategic depth not only in Syria but also in Yemen and Iraq. Unfortunately Syrians will suffer more.

It is perplexing that, the US, the West and almost all of the Muslim world are fighting the IS terror but refuse to see Iran and Russia doing the same at their own. It is necessary they should see the monster with a same eye and join forces to eliminate it.
It is high time the world should except enough is enough of every form of terror and world must have peace and progressive future for the entire humanity.

@bogdown there is Right and there is Wrong. Look at what Saudi coalition are doing in Yemen where hundreds of women and children have been killed by Saudi air strikes. If a Sunni nation kills civilians, why should Pakistan support!? Pakistan will not blindly support Sunni nations fighting Shia. In Iran-Iraq war, Pakistan was always neutral and tried to bring peace between them.

Lets be clear here. Iranian are openly sending their forces and generals to a far off country which doesn't even share the border with them. Now god forbid, if a Pakistani servicemen was found in similar circumstances, inside Afghanistan, protecting Pakistan's interests and security in foreign land, we will be among the very first, specially our liberal class to raise a uproar against it. People need to get the stock of the situation. In geopolitics, its the national interests which matters, please dont moan if those responsible for Pakistan's security and its interests get involved in foreign lands for the sake of Pakistan. Support them.

Iran has no right to interfere in the affairs of the middle east and it should stop supporting the illegitimate regimes in Syria, Yemen and also Iraq. The people of Syria and Yemen, emboldened by Arab Spring, wanted to replace rulers, who had been in power for decades together, and in this struggle, Yemenis succeeded to some extent, while Syrian are still fighting. However, with the assistance of Iran, Syrian President, is not ready to quit and to save his government, they have killed and displaced thousands innocent civilians, while the revolution of Yemen, was also manipulated and taken over by Houthis, with the help of Iranis. If the Iran continued to support illegitimate governments in Syria and Yemen, it will have to pay a heavy price at the hands of Arabs.

In fact Iran is with Syria /Asad in order to prevent plantation of a puppet rerime as desired by all vested interests. God forbid if this happens Israel will be too pleased as it would help it in its sinister designs and plans of expansion of its territory in the shape of Greater Israel. All those who want Asad to quit are as such assisting Israel....one of them being Aley Saud - the self proclaimed Custodians and leaders of Ummah. Analysing the comments muslims are divided in two political versions of Islam, Arab islam and non Arab (Persian ) islam. Historically both centres have been at each others throat for one reason or another. Pakistan, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and many more are grounds for proxy war. I wish both saudi and Iran would suffer in the same way as they made rest of Muslim world bleed..

It is easy, or rather convenient, for some to say why is Iran meddling in another country. Question is if Iran is not stopping ISIL, who else going to do it??? Just look in your own neighborhood, how many supporters are in Pakistan for TTP or other sectarian groups. If one day they decided to stage a war against the government/Army, and your Army can't protect you, wouldn't you be requesting help from others??? Unless you want your elders to be slaughtered in front of you and you want all your women to be raped and all graves of your ancestors to be demolished. Think about it.

When Saudi Arabia asked for troops, so much hue and cry over fighting in foreign lands.Here a full fledged General is Killed fighting in a foreign country but for a lot of Pakistanis it is , one has to question why the same rule doesn't apply now? Btw a General wont be fighting without his troops, the advisor story is nonsense.

@Dr.Arshad ... ... The Russian military is as ruthless as Islamic State. The Russians came in to aid Bashar Assad while Washington was still dithering. The Pentagon analysis was faulty. The Iranian and Russian military are experienced in battle strategy and tactics and will aid the Syrian Army on the ground. The die has been cast. Whatever Obama has to say, ISIS needs to be eliminated by any means possible.
