LONDON: Terming the Kashmir issue an unfinished agenda of partition of the Subcontinent, Army Chief Gen Raheel Sharif said on Friday that the world community must come forward to help resolve the longstanding issue if it wants genuine peace in the region.
Speaking at the Royal United Services Institute, an independent think tank on defence and security, he said that Indian intransigence, violations of the Line of Control and indirect strategy against Pakistan were adversely affecting the region.
He said the dispute between Pakistan and India “resides in the Kashmir issue”.
The army chief said that Pakistan would continue to support all efforts for an enduring and permanent peace in Afghanistan and warned against detractors and spoilers of these efforts. “While we continue to support enduring and permanent peace in Afghanistan, let us all beware of detractors and spoilers.”
Gen Raheel Sharif said that reconciliation was the only way forward in Afghanistan and everyone should support it, according to a tweet by ISPR chief Lt Gen Asim Saleem Bajwa.
The army chief said, “We have brotherly relations and blood ties with people of Afghanistan.” Border management and far greater international cooperation were needed for regional peace. He said that anti-Pakistan propaganda must come to an end.
Commenting on Pakistan’s security environment, he said it’s now becoming conducive for upward economic trajectory, adding that efforts for “total security will continue”.

The main sticking point is Pakistan cannot sell the idea to India that Kashmir belongs to Pakistan. When India and Pakistan were partitioned, Kashmir was not partitioned by the British because the plan being Kashmir was to become an independent state. But the Hindu Dogra Raja panicked when the Pashtoons started moving in and belatedly ceded Kashmir to India. It was only then that the Indian army corps moved in to occupy territories not already occupied by the hill tribes and the Pakistani army. That is why today we have the LOC in Kashmir and all the present Kashmir drama.

Everytime Pakistani leaders talk about Kashmir issue overseas is another lost opportunity to talk about growing the economy, lifting the population from abject powerty, inviting foreign investments, etc etc. May be it is intentional. Army is clearly on board for peace negotiations. Why does India keep acting like it is only Nawaz Sharif who asks for peace? The Army repeatedly emphasizes a final Kashmir resolution. Never do I hear the Army call for plebiscite either, so they probably want Modi to implement the Musharrahf-Singh agreement.

I do not think Pakistan Army will ever try to come to an agreed mutual settlement. This would clearly undermine the importance of the army in Pakistan. On the other hand it is for the people to put pressure on politicians and also army to focus on development education healthcare rather than spending half of your revenue buying western weapons

K-word is the hurdle between the 2 countries. First of all they have to remove poverty from the region and develop their own constituencies before they talk about regions. please concentrate on development of peoples life and not on the regions. India has moved forward and developed marginally but regret Pakistan forgot the word development and keeps on climbing Kashmir which is not healthy for them. Technically speaking whole Kashmir belongs to India but this is old history, matter should be settled mutually through negotiations as per the changed situation instead of indulging in rhetorics and using the issue to gain political points using sensitivity of public to Kashmir issue, applicable to both countries fighting on the issue.

General Raheel is correct that peace in the region depends on the resolution of the Kashmir issue. In order to resolve it and first of all, India and Pakistan should mutually choose to stop seeing it an issue of national ego and pride. Secondly, the focus should be placed on welfare of the people of Kashmir. India and Pakistan should allow freedom of movement and trade between Azad Kashmir and the Indian occupied Kashmir and remove their armies from the LOC. In step 2 after mutual confidence building, Kashmir can be declared as an autonomous and independent territory to be governed and administered by the Kashmiris with a joint security guarantee from both India and Pakistan.

I think both side has some part of Kashmir. can't make it international border and deal done for all time so that both govt can focus on many other development agenda. Its stupid issue. In 1947 Pakistan invaded and got some portion of Kashmir, what will happen if India will demand 1st give that portion and also portion of Kashmir which is handed to China by Pakistan. I mean it will never resolved if Pak keep press their knob. In International median make comments that Pakistan make this issue alive to counter their failed ruling for 65 years. I will say whatever both country has got be happy and develop their own territory.

The political scene in New Delhi has changed irrevocably and Pak political leaders and Generals need to understand the change. What then is this change? In the past some leading political figures had some connection with Pakistan (born in places Now in Pakistan). The two leading examples are the ex-Deputy PM of the BJP, Mr Advani (born in Sindh) and the Congress PM MMS (10 years till 2013) born in the Pak Punjab.They had some good childhood memories. The current leaders of these two parties have no connection with Pak areas and no fond memories. They only 'know' of the friction & wars between the two countries. Their views and policies are different as is evident from Mrs Swaraj's objection to the CPEC through the Pak Kashmir and her response to the PM's UN speech. Please fasten seat belts for rough rides.

Kashmir is colonized by China(20%), Pakistan(35%) and India(45%). No one nation is agreeing to give their share of land. Pakistan wants India's share and rejects China's share. India wants status quo. China is silent. Pakistan is fighting for Azadi but in reality only ruler will get changed. Delusional Kashmiri won't get any Azadi. Better sense prevails. Lets settle the score permanently and move ahead taking care of our share of Kashmiri people. This will give us time and energy to look into real issues like dwindling economy, corruption, poverty, power crisis, polio, health care, climate change, terrorism etc. People on both side of border are really fed up with this fight & misrule for 68 years and want peace-development-education.

Kashmir is different from Hyderabad takeover by Indian forces after partition. Pakistan has a claim and will keep on fighting with India on this issue doesn’t matter in UN, in talks or on the ground. Pakistan have obligation with people of Kashmir to support them any possible way, a proxy war, nuclear war or any peace process. General is offering peace talks that will end conflict, Its Indian option to make a move and select an option, war or peace. Just a reminder, war means total annihilation without possibility of human recovery, might engulf other countries.

I think the Kashmir's should forget the politicians and make them irrelevant, by pursuing their wishes as they want, i.e. if a Kashmiri from India wants to settle in Pakistan he or she should do so, similarly a Kashmiri from P. wishes to settle in I. he should do so. Migration has made the world much smaller. There are millions of Indians, Pakistani's, Chinese, etc settled away from home, so should the Kashmiri's if they wish, why even bother about what happened 68 years back, "unfinished business" or finished business. India is hungriest country with huge req of rice & wheat.
Last time i checked india has to buy rice through dubai.

India wants to maintain Status Qou SIMPLY! it want to dictate its term which isn't possible since Pakistan is Nuclear Country. With rhetoric of Terrorism India would only deprive people from Prosperity. If India want us to believe that it is very innocent and doing nothing to destabilize Pakistan that is simply laughable. Their ministers have publicly revealed that they do spread terrorism in Pakistan (Guerrilla Wars)

We need to end the Kashmir rhetoric and pursue peace outside of this issue. Indians are just not going to walk out of Kashmir and we have to accept this reality. I'm more interested in buiding a peaceful and prosperous future for the Pakistani youth rather than pursue the Kashmir agenda.

if we define our relationship considering how it will affect the poor people - that are the majority in our countries and therefore are the main representation of our countries, we (india & pakistan) will realize that we must be friends.
so lets be friends and be humble.. and help the poor and suffering people.. all our problems, whether its kashmir or otherwise will be resolved.
