KARACHI: A traffic police official was shot dead in an armed attack in the Malir area of the metropolis on Wednesday evening, a police official said.

“Zulfiqar, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), was gunned down by unknown assailants near Malir Kala Board,” said the police official.

The police official further added that the victim suffered a single gunshot wound to the head.

Karachi-East DIG, Munir Ahmed Shaikh told Dawn that the police has started their investigation and are probing for the motive behind the recent attacks on traffic police officials.

Earlier in September, a traffic police constable was shot dead while two others sustained bullet wounds in an armed attack in Site-B area of the metropolis.

In August, two policemen helping traffic police in the busy Saddar area were gunned down by armed riders when they were asked to stop.

Police officials suspect that three militant groups have become ‘active’ in targeting policemen after a lull in such activities.
