KOHAT: The security of central jail, Kohat, also housing a number of terrorists, has been tightened in view of threats by militants, police said.

They said that additional troops of the Pakistan Army and police had also been deployed at the barricades, while more checkposts were being established on the roads leading to the jail. In this connection, the security review committee of Kohat district comprising deputy commissioner Zahir Shah, DPO Sohaib Ashraf, Counter Terrorism Department SP Ihsanullah Khan, special branch official Nasrullah Khan and officials of the armed forces visited the Kohat jail on Wednesday and checked the security arrangements in and outside the prison.

The authorities asked the officials concerned to install more security cameras and allow the visitors only through walkthrough gates. On this occasion, the DPO suggested that daily meetings of inmates with their visitors should be stopped and food and fruit brought for them should also be banned as it was available inside the prison. He stated that a joint rehearsal for the safety of the prison should be made on weekly basis.

HASHISH SEIZED: The Jarma police foiled an attempt of smuggling hashish from tribal area to down country and arrested two alleged smugglers on Wednesday.

A suspicious Suzuki pickup (CG-9380) was stopped and on checking 15 kilogrammes of hashish was recovered from its secret cavities. The Gumbat police also arrested the alleged smugglers Tariq Nawaz of Karak and Syed Omer of Kohat.

OIL THEFT: The oil companies have failed to stop theft of oil by the tanker mafia.

Sources claimed that authorised dealers sold the crude oil to mafia while transporting it to the Attock refinery. The mafia people then process it in improvised manner and marker it illegally despite ban on the open sale and unlicenced business of lubricants, they said.

The sources said that insiders in the companies had been providing extra oil to the oil tankers for this purpose.

Meanwhile, the Gumbat police in a raid in Nakband area seized 630 liters of stolen diesel and nabbed two persons on Wednesday. Sources said that the oil had been sold by the tanker mafia which brought it from the refinery to petrol pumps in Kohat. They said alleged owners of the stolen oil, Aminur Rehman of Nakband and Akram Khan of Lakki Marwat, had been arrested and a case registered against them.
