UNITED NATIONS: Recognising the challenges the refugee/migrants crisis poses to some member states, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged European states to respond “responsibly and humanely”.

In telephonic conversations with the heads of government of Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia on Tuesday, he stressed that people arriving in Europe have a right to seek asylum without any form of discrimination, a press statement said.

Commending the efforts of European leaders, Mr Ban called upon European Union countries to live up to their obligations and the standards they have set. He underlined the need for compassion and global solidarity, applauding the inspiring examples that have been displayed all over Europe by citizens.
