UN chief monitoring situation at India-Pakistan border

UNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is monitoring the situation at the India-Pakistan border following the recent upsurge in violence along the disputed border and has urged restraint on the part of both governments.
Eleven civilians were reportedly killed (8 Pakistanis and 3 Indians) in the latest cross-border firing.
“We continue to monitor situation about the reports of recent escalation of violence along the Line of Control between India and Pakistan,” UN spokesman Stefane Djuarric said on Monday.

In an earlier statement, UN Chief called upon the governments of India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint and take all feasible steps to ensure the protection of civilians.
Mr Ban again urged India and Pakistan to resolve their differences through dialogue.
Tension has mounted between the two countries after talks between the national security advisers of the two counties were called off after India refused to discuss Kashmir during the meeting.

Kashmir was not on the agenda and all issues related to terrorism was the agenda. If Pakistan wish to discuss Kashmir then another meeting should have suggested on foreign secretary level.

@Khan- Pakistani UN cant do anything now, as per UN Kashmir is not a disputed territory, to be honest if Pakistan wanted to discuss things there was no need to involve a third Party. When Pakistan doesnt respect & approve the democratically elected govt in Kashmir, then is it fair to expect that the Indian Govt should respect the Gillanis, & separatist leaders.

Is UN also not monitoring Syria, Iraq, Israel, Palestine, afghanistan, cremia, ukarain, north Korea, south china sea, Libya, nigeria, maili, what not and what not also kashmir. UN is good for its development programmes. It has failed to solve boundary and political issues. Let us concede that.

aree bhai, let us both sit together on an single agenda, which is 'border dispute' and proceed further. It is as simple as that. I see for several years both the nation is talking about this and that, no one is willing to conclude, seems both are not interested to do so.

India has made it clear that Kashmir is an integral part of the country. From the last 68 years we also know that the stumbling block as far as relations between the countries are concerned, is Kashmir. For the next 68 years too this will continue. So the best option would be to accept the LOC as international border and get on with business.

The issue is Kashmir, if settled amicably, you will see the exchange of Halva Puree from both sides. Once we had a common Schools, Colleges, Offices, Living Streets. Surely the old terms would revive with tremendous sentiments. The Ball is in Indian Court.

Obviously,UN's Chief will try his best to diffuse the growing confrontational crisis between two born unfriendly nations possessing a storehouse of nuclear weapons.It is futile to make them see reason.It is somewhat endemic with both.But as in the past,they are expected to calm down soon.Nothing to worry for such skirmishes.Still hoping that both sit together to shut down their mutual provocative acts pending a dialogue on long-time old issues.

Kashmir and terrorism go hand in hand and are not mutually exclusive as it is the root cause of terrorism. You want terrorism to end? Resolve Kashmir issue, but India has nothing to gain and everything to lose hence they avoid talks and engage in slow ethnic cleansing.

@prasant Yo talk about democracy in India and yet the social injustices in India are enormous!!! The poor consist of the majority of the masses. Are you sure there is democracy in India? Or just on paper . How can majority of people who are not even educated even think what is right and wrong? Lived there and seen it all!!!! There is no comparison with how democracy and freedom are practiced in the West and India!!!!

The numbers of dead speaks volumes on who is the agressor. Pakistan has always had a problem firing blindly into Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK) in case the bullets hits our brethren on the other side. Many posted on the border, especially from Azad Kashmir, are directly related to people on the other side. India has no such problem firing into Pakistan.

@Bob ...You cannot compare apples with oranges.....Each has got its own flavour & taste....I feel India is much better democracy than US / UK given the constraints of taking along all sub-nationalities in the subcontinent....Women never got to get into the high post in-spite of being democracies for centuries together. Whereas women ruled four South Asian nations within 50 years after getting rid of colonialism.
Margaret Thacher is the only woman to represent UK and US hasn't even one.

@Bob Looks like you need a lesson on democracy. In your so called western democracy a billionaire in Silicon valley has one vote just like a poor Homeless person in San Francisco. The democracy we differentiate between rich and poor. For the reasons you mentioned are what makes India unique, with so many poor people, so many different languages, different religions we still go to elections every 5 years like clockwork precision and elect our Government and we also witness smooth transition of power. What part of it is difficult for you to understand?

Though the cancellation of the NSA level talk was unfortunate but putting Kashmir and Huriyat in the agenda for the NSA talk was meaningless and provocative. NSA is about security challenges not territory disputes. It was more like if Pakistan meet Huriyat leaders before the BSF-Rangers talk to decide what to discuss.
Had Kashmir appeared at the foreign secretary level talk it would have been more meaningful and acceptable agenda.

@NORI - India has more secessionist movement than anywhere in the world. India is holding together with the power of guns, Maoist rebels in Assam, Sikhs for Khalistan, and there are many others. Against very tall claims it makes, India is anything but a secular country which has been exposed to the world very widely now. Consider Bal Thakary and his Akhand Bharat movement and the country wide support for it. Or else Modi would have never won the elections if their mentality was so secular.

The “ world health organization” (WHO) needs to improve the screening, identification, and assistance system for victims specially for children’s women and girls access legal and social services,. senior citizen in Asia are suffering who do not have families support.

Sir as Pakistani i do have lots of respect for your concern, but is their anyone in this world who can pursue the case, which is pending in United Nations for the Kashmiri people? This was a good approach to let UN know on border scenario. However the Resolution of Plebiscite in Kashmir passed in 1948 is seeming dead now ? It must be the cause of Shimla agreement wherein both sides agreed to be doing away all issues with bilateral approach. However it did not earn Pakistan nothing save agreeing the birth of a 3rd state in the sub continent called Bangla Desh? Now meetings on secretarial levels is almost out of fashion and govt should resort to earlier diplomacy via multi-literal-ism involving international organization like UNO etc. The killing of our soldiers can be a good instance for International Criminal Court too? Our foreign office has gradually attained the style of armed chair thinkers doing no practical approaches.
