Gilani to skip court in TDAP cases today

MULTAN: Former Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said that he would not appear before the anti-corruption court in Karachi in the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) cases today (Monday) due to the murder of a former secretary general of the Karachi District Bar Association.

Talking to Dawn, Mr Gilani said he had consulted his counsel, Farooq H Naek, over the issue who suggested that he (Gilani) should not appear before the court as the lawyers had announced boycotting the courts’ proceedings in protest against the killing.

He said some new cases had been lodged against him and Makhdoom Amin Fahim in connection with the TDAP issue and non-bailable warrants had been issued in these cases.

He condemned the killing of former secretary district bar Karachi and offered condolences to the bereaved family.

Gilani saheb had ignored notices to appear before the concerned authority earlier and this was the reason for issuance of his arrest warrants. But having been the PM and having seen the routine of such matters by himself in the past he seems to be confident enough that he will not be arrested despite warrants and so is playing tricks to prolong the case as much as possible. If...if according to his claims he is innocent then he should get his name cleared at the earliest instead of trying to delay the hearings.

The court should issue an arrest warrant for contempt if he fails to show up.

It is not important to him to appear in court. His lawyer wants the case continued until 2035. The real fact is he is more powerful than the judge. Pakistan's judicial system is Pakistan's third largest problem after terrorism/crime and lack of functioning utilities; but it contributes to both of those problems. It also ads to the government's burden of poor tax collection.

Just one trip to his multiple houses or to any house owned by his children will be enough evidence to implicit him in all the corruption and looting cases against him. Lavish or rather ultra-lavish lifestyles are being adorned by his family yet these people claim innocence and everything to be a political propaganda by the opposition parties. Gilani/Zardari govt did absolutely nothing against terrorism during their 5 years in office, except amass wealth beyond anyone's dreams. Believe me, when I say, their 10 generations if not more, can live without doing any work. All thanks to their 5 years in office!

it's a Shame the law in Pakistan is only for the poor, the rich and the upper class are exempted. when will that day come when law will be implemented to all in Pakistan like in the west and America
