Published December 25, 2001

LAHORE, Dec 24: A two-day meeting of the Jamiat Ulemai-i-Islam general council will open at the Jamia Madnia here on Tuesday.

The participants will discuss the situation in the country, particularly after the overthrow of the Taliban government in Afghanistan and the Pakistan government’s decision to act against various militant organizations.

The meeting will also endorse the decisions taken at a recent meeting of the party’s central Shoora.

The Shoora had decided that the party would take part in the electoral process and continue to support the Taliban.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the provincial working committee of the Jamaat-i-Islami has been called for Wednesday. Among other issues, the participants will discuss the arrest of JI leaders and the future course of action of the Pak Afghan Defence Council.
