BEIJING, Oct 14: China on Tuesday expressed support to the position taken by the Organization of Islamic Conference that the sovereign status of Iraq should be restored as early as possible.

“The United States should give a feasible timeframe for the restoration of the sovereign status of Iraq, allowing the local people to run their affairs independently,” said Chinese foreign office spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue while talking to APP here.

She said the OIC had a significant role to play in addressing the Iraq issue. China, she said, was supportive of the new United Nations resolution for helping the Iraqi people regain their sovereign rights.

She said the new resolution must define the UN’s role in the reconstruction of Iraq. It should take into consideration the concerns being shown by the Iraqi people, she said.

She said China was looking forward to the adoption of a consensus resolution as soon as possible. In this connection, she added, her country was in contact with the relevant parties.—APP
