HYDERABAD, Oct 14: A Decentralization Support Programme delegation met with the district Nazims of Hyderabad and Badin here on Tuesday to discuss issues related to capacity building of the district government system.

The delegation was headed by Sindh DSP programme director Rizwan Ahmed and capacity development specialist Naveed Alauddin.

The delegation heard the problems being faced by the district governments in their functioning.

It was decided in the meeting that another meeting with the district Nazims of Sindh would be held in Karachi.

Mr Rizwan told this correspondent that the programme was a US$300 million joint programme of the Asian Development Bank and the Pakistan government, aimed at promoting decentralisation and improving local government efficiency.

The objectives of the programme included, he said, making local government accounting a transparent process, putting necessary systems in place and training people, promoting monitoring of service delivery, making recruitment processes competitive and transparent and promoting participation of stakeholders in decision-making processes.

He said that another aspect of the programme was to assist the local governments in investing in their human resources and developing/sustaining institutions and institutional arrangements.
