IN 2007, Pakistan was struck by a disastrous flood which was the outcome of the melting of glaciers and heavy summer monsoon rains. The fast-flowing water started its journey from the northern mountains, passed through Punjab with its devastating effects and finally entered Sindh. Many cities of Sindh, particularly Larkana, were affected.
Larkana is a small town. But soon it had an influx of people who had lost their houses in the flood.
Even today, many flood-affected people are living in tents in Larkana. They are suffering a lot as they have been deprived of the basic necessities of life. Their unhygienic living conditions and unavailability of food are cause for concern.
I urge the Sindh government to restart the rehabilitation process and provide the flood-affected people with food, shelter and clothes.
