AHMEDABAD (India), Oct 11: India set New Zealand a fourth innings target of 370 after making a second declaration on the fourth day of the first Test on Saturday.

India raced to 209 for six after tea before giving their bowlers three-and-a-half sessions to seal victory.

New Zealand were 48 for one at stumps. Opener Lou Vincent (21 not out) was joined by nightwatchman Daryl Tuffey after Mark Richardson was out for 21.

The tourists had started the day on 282 for eight in their first innings and were bowled out for 340 close to lunch in reply to India’s first innings 500.

Tailender Daniel Vettori hit 60 in the morning in a rearguard effort to help the avert the follow on with the last three wickets adding 113 runs.

When India batted again, Rahul Dravid, who made 222 in the first innings, top-scored again with a chancy 73 from 86 balls. Vangipurappu Laxman struck 44 from 35 balls as India chased for runs in typical one-day fashion.

Off-spinner Paul Wiseman grabbed four for 64, including the wicket of Sachin Tendulkar who was out for seven, trying to push the score along. He made only eight in the first innings.
