Paris airport imposes fine of 40,000 euros on PIA

LAHORE: The Paris Airport Authority has imposed a fine of 40,000 euros on the Pakistan International Airlines for violating ‘curfew hours’ (at the airport).
The Paris Airport Authority has recently written a letter to the PIA asking it to pay 40,000 euros for violating the curfew hours (between 12 mid night to 6am at the airport) in last September by its Lahore-Paris flight.
The PIA flight landed and took off in curfew hours. According to a source, the Paris Airport Authority has warned the PIA to strictly follow its rules and avoid such violations in the future.

PIA spokesman Aamir Memon told Dawn that a PIA flight from Lahore to Paris got delayed in last September because of a technical issue. “The PIA flight had to land and take off during the curfew hours at the Paris airport because of this reason,” he said, adding the PIA management had spoken to its office manager in Paris and hopefully this fine would be waived of as this was a “routine matter”.
On the other hand, the PIA has yet to clear its outstanding dues of the General Authority of Civil Aviation of Saudi Arabia regarding air navigation charges.
The outstanding dues amounting to more than SAR 5 million in connection with Air Navigation invoice have been pending since February this year.
The Saudi aviation authority had stressed on early settlement of outstanding dues. The national flag carrier has already lost most of its business on profitable routes. Very few lucrative business routes are available and Jeddah is one of them.
The Saudi authority last year had penalised PIA over continuous flight delays and cancellations during the Haj rush at the Jeddah Airport. Fine was also imposed after reviewing all the data available and failure of PIA’s commitment to streamline its operations. It had also highlighted the schedule lapses and mishandling of passengers.
It had also issued many notices to PIA on creating disruption by flight cancellation, mismanagement of flight schedule, creating passengers chaos and over bookings at the Jeddah Airport Hajj Terminal.
Aamir Memon said the PIA would clear the remaining outstanding amount in connection with air navigation to the Saudi aviation next week. He said the PIA faced problems during the last Haj operation because of shortage of fleet. “This year the PIA is operating seven Boeing and two A-330 aircraft for the Haj operation and hopefully there will be no delay,” he added.

Aren't we sick and tired of read such stories about PIA twice a week. The chairman and directors can't manage the airline even with 4 times as many employees as would be necessary for such an organisation. It looks as if this government is always on holidays. Whatever you look at they would mismanage it to the foolish limits, be it Nandipur, water logged metro, coal based energy generation near to major cities and about a 1000 kilometers from landing ports, LNG. Whatever you name, it would come out as a blunder.

Well said - however, you need to follow the curfew hours at the airport. Yes summon the ambassador and soon PIA flights to Paris will be shut down. Air France does not fly to Pakistan so PIA flying to Paris is a good gesture by French Authorities.

It is not only pity but also a shameless attitude of the PIA and its executives! In the 50s/60s it was one of the best. Later until mid-70s reasonably good, but now deteriorated not only its services but also the physical conditions of the fleet. No consideration for safety, irregular behaviour of the flying crew - recent misadventure of a senior pilot flying without the necessary break from Lahore to Toronto - as if they are "supermen"!
Even other 3rd world country airlines operate at a considerably better level.

Due to outstanding amount to be paid to Saudi Civil Aviation, PIA staff airport access cards are not renewed. They use their personal contact at the airport to get access into restricted areas. On every single flight from Riyadh poor staff use their contacts to get into aircraft and boarding areas. What a pity situation

If there is a curfew imposed for no flight during a set time period & when other country`s airline is following, why there is excuse for Pakistan ? If anyone has any pride, an ounce of professionalism and any sense of accountability starting from the highest office of the country down to mid to senior level PIA management, then heads should have rolled long time ago and we shouldn't have seen such embarrassments repeated..

Calling PIA an airline is a disgrace to most airlines in the world. PIA does not even know what is their target market!. Service is non existent, food is horrible and totally unreliable. PIA has no idea as to how it should serve its clients (during an international flight recently, a friend of mine was told "sorry sir, coffee has finished". It has become an airline for the Pakistani labourers to the Middle East, at best. No one in his/her right mind would even consider flying PIA. I recently heard that it even employs pilots without having a basic education. As long as someone senior in the government "recommends" you, there is no need for you to have any qualifications. I really don't understand. Why do we need this airline?. Also, let us ask ourselves, what will we miss if PIA was not there?. Losing billions of rupees every year, wouldn't we be better off without it?.

@stevenson Mr. Stevenson, I can not believe that PIA remains the first choice among expatriates. PIA never was and is not (unless you are talking about the late 60s or early 70s!). There are almost no expatriates in Pakistan and the ones who are there, ONLY fly Emirates, including the ones working for the United Nations. Your comparing the Musharraf era (and not the last 5 years of PPP government!) with PMLN only shows one thing that you are a Pakistani and a PMLN supporter but don't have the guts to say that you are.

Qantas leaves Dubai in the night, and has to land by 11pm at Sydney airport, if the flight is delayed, it does not go to Sydney. Sydney airport has a strict curfew and Qantas is the last flight that arrives before the airport shuts down.

@zeeshan You are so right! In the 1970s, while a student at Harvard University, I met a group of four South African civil servants. When they found out that I was from Pakistan, they congratulated me on our country having such a fine airline. They said that they had once traveled by PIA because it was the only alternative available. The experience was so good that these four had decided to always travel by PIA whenever it was available. They said that their experience with the airline had remained consistently excellent. I wonder how many people would say that of PIA today.

They have a necessary office in the most extravagant street of champs elysse and you know what the airline office closes at 4PM. Wonder if any clients use this office. The flight staff has been caught on a number of occasions, selling cigarettes and other items for local consumption. Don't be surprised if they ban it completely

PIA is suffering internally and externally. Its Planes are at the beck and call of the Administration. Planes have to be taken out of service to serve the frequent trips being made by the VVIPs. On top of that, over staffing, reluctance to embrace new technology adds to the misery of PIA.

PIA, Priority to nepotism main cause of catastrophe. Being overseas 1st choice is PIA but always felt stranger.
