KABUL, Dec 23: United Nations special envoy to Afghanistan, Lakhdar Brahimi, has held a flurry of meetings with officials of the new interim government and various other key players in the country’s peace process, his spokesman said Sunday.

Ahmed Fawzi told reporters that Brahimi, who travelled to Afghanistan for Saturday’s inauguration of the interim administration, was expected to remain in the country for two to three weeks.

He was due later Sunday to meet Hamid Karzai, chairman of the 30-member interim cabinet whose job it is to bring peace to the country and start the rebuilding process.

Brahimi was expected to hand over a letter to Karzai from UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan congratulating him and wishing him well in tackling his new responsibilities.—AFP
