VIENNA, Oct 9: Top seeds Roger Federer and Carlos Moya stayed on track for a final showdown at the CA Trophy after reaching the last eight with contrasting victories on Thursday.

Defending champion Federer had to grit his teeth to survive a stern test against Slovak qualifier Karol Beck, eventually winning 6-3 4-6 6-4 after bouncing back from a break down in the third set.

The victory represents the Wimbledon champion’s 64th this year, making the Swiss the most prolific winner on the ATP Tour this season ahead of U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick.

Second seed Moya, who lost to Federer in the semifinals of the indoor event last year, had a much swifter passage into the quarter-finals as he overpowered American Vince Spadea 6-2 6-1. With his consistent and strong serving, the Spaniard wrapped up the match in only 52 minutes.

Results:
