‘Musharraf harmed Kashmir cause most’

LAHORE: Federal Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid said on Saturday former military dictator Pervez Musharraf had harmed the Kashmir cause the most.
Talking to the media here, he said everyone knew that Kashmir was the real and major issue between India and Pakistan.
He said the Kashmir issue would have been solved by now and Pakistan would not be facing energy crisis and terrorism today had Musharraf not overturned a democratic government in 1999.
He said the ‘political party of Aabpara’ (a reference to the headquarters of an agency in Islamabad’s Aabpara intersection) had vanished.
“Where is the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) formed by Musharraf?” he asked.
The minister said operation in Karachi against militants was started after a unanimous agreement.
He denied reports that the Sindh government was not cooperating in the Karachi operation. He told a questioner that PPP co-chairman Asif Zardari was a Pakistani and had every right to return and live in the country.

Mr. Parvaiz Rashid should give us some facts and figures as to how his government is better than Gen Musharraf,s ? When did PMLN ever managed to get the Indians round the table to talk about Kashmir. Gen. Musharraf, at least, made them admit on record that Kashmir is the main issue between us!!! Lets see if you can get anywhere near that.

While Pakistan probably prospered under Musharraf, her international relations suffered during those years. Musharraf did not have the foresight that leaders need. He was more interested in getting the support of the masses using rhetorics rather than focusing on long term growth. His biggest failure was definitely the Kargil intrusion that only earned him the international ridicule

I guess we as a country like being rule by dictators than electing our own rulers. One thing all dictators make sure first is, positive media coverage during their rule. Elected governments can't control media to that extent. So they end up looking bad compared to dictators.

I suggest to Pervaiz Rasheed talk to public with truth and honesty. What is happening now, during Zardari and prior to Musharraf are tangible proofs for wrong doings which led country to collapse. But, as per eminent Indian Jurist Sh Ram Jethmalani, the solution offered by President Musharraf was most pragmatic and India missed the opportunity of finding lasting peace in Kashmir. It may be worthwhile to recall a resolution was just short of announcing during Musharraf Vajpayee meeting at Agra, India. It is also my personal opinion that Musharraf is a clever politician and I admire his capabilities.

Kashmir is a problem created by the British while leaving India. During their raj their policy was 'divide and rule'. When they realized that they could no longer rule India they changed it to 'divide and ruin'. Both India and Pakistan are victims of it. They are wasting all their resources fighting for Kashmir. It is time to decide that issue once for all and stop unnecessary fighting. This nonsense needs a strong political stand by both countries. It is no use blaming this or that, face the truth.

The whole world knows Kashmir is the root cause of problem and conflict in South Asia and a zone of possible catastrophic consequences, should India not mend its ways. Musharaf convinced the Indians for a way forward, but extremists in Indian government and Indian army scuttled it. Nawaz did not even get a mention of it in the joint declaration in UFA. Dont try and deflect Nawaz's incompetence by dragging President Musharaf in to it. You will be judged by the public.

During Musharraf era Pakistan was recognized and respected in the world. Pakistani economy was good, common public was happy, corruption was minimal. On the other hand, current government can' even provide the basic necessities such as water and electric. Thanks to China, if they haven't decided to invest in Pakistan then the Nawaz government would not have anything to show. And the most interesting thing is that these investment ideas were given to China by Musharraf.

The kind of acceptance and popularity Musharaf got internationally, during his tenure (after Ayub Khan) no one has ever been able to come even close. Musharaf was paid 200,000 plus for his single lecture. Can you show me anyone from the subcontinent who could match this.

Is it not time for India, Pakistan and a few other coutries to form a united entity like European Union, calling something like USEAN (Union of south east Asian Nations)? They can plan to have a composite government, common currency, common economic and political agenda? Look at the amount of resources that will be saved and can potentially be diverted for the good of the common man.

Lot of people here say, ohh Musharraf is sincere or economy was good or he is patriot. Well, all those things may be true (or not) is a separate discussion. Did he harmed Kashmir cause or not ? He is military man and lacks the skills of a politician. Unnecessary bravado does not help in some situations one has to be a visionary and leader to solve complex problems. Musharraf may be sincere and brave a soldier but he s definitely not a transformational leader. He will always be remembered as a mastermind of Kargil and dictatorship and nothing else.
