TOBA TEK SINGH: The Punjab government accepted local people’s demand to shift the fruit and vegetable market – located on a narrow piece of land – to a wider place.

The government approved shifting of the market from underpass road to outside the city opposite the district police lines.

Market Committee Chairman Rana Abdul Qayyum said on Wednesday the map of the new location had been approved and 48 kanals and eight marlas had been selected where previously a cattle market was set up once a month.

He said that Rs5.6 million had already been paid by 37 commission agents to the market committee as token money for allottment of shops in the proposed fruit and vegetable market while the committee would spend Rs52 million on shifting and development.

Spokesman for the fruit and vegetable commission agents, Iftikhar Ahmad Kassana, said the current location of the market near railway underpass was congested and when the railway crossing was closed, all the traffic passed from the market. Resultantly, traffic was often blocked during the busy morning hours.

He said the current location was small and passing through stock of fruits and vegetables was hard for customers.

He said after shifting to the new location a wider place would be available. He added that a list of commission agents had been handed over to the market committee chairman for allottment of shops at the new location.

Ramazan bazaar: Pirmahal Assistant Commissioner (AC) Hafiz Muhammad Najeeb raided a mill and found flour bags with less quantity there on Wednesday.

He fined mill owner Munir Jat Rs60,000 as their stall at a Ramazan bazaar in Pirmahal was also selling bags with less quantity.

The AC took action on the report of Punjab Education Department Additional Secretary Khurshid Zaidi who visited the bazaar on Wednesday.

On Zaidi’s order, the AC fined a ghee mill for selling ghee and cooking oil at inflated rates.

Mr Zaidi also visited a Ramazan bazaar in Toba Tek Singh and found the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) stall had less weight flour bags and torn sugar packets.

He directed Assistant Commissioner Wasif Bashir Khokhar to seize flour bags and sugar packets.

Also, thieves took away commodities worth Rs25,000 from the USC stall in Ramazan bazaar in Kamalia late on Tuesday.

RAZED: Pirmahal AC Hafiz Muhammad Najeeb and tehsildar Manzar Hafeez got razed a wall of an oil mill erected illegally on state land on Sindhilianwali Bypass Road in Pirmahal.
