ISLAMABAD: Around 800 daily-wage teaching and non-teaching employees of the educational institutions run by the Federal Directorate for Education (FDE) have not received their salaries for a whole year. “We do not know what we have done to deserve this. We have been working without salaries for the last one year. Is this not a violation of human-rights?” asked a daily-wage teacher, requesting anonymity.

Over 800 daily-wage employees, hired to meet the shortage of regular salaried staff at FDE-run institutions, have not been paid for the last one year.

Since the last few months, these employees have been protesting from time to time outside the FDE building demanding for their salaries to be released and for their services to be regularised.

An FDE official told Dawn that a list of employees has been finalised and the matter would be resolved soon. “We have concerns over the appointment of a numbers of daily-wage employees, because there is a large number whose appointments were not based on merit,” the official said.

However, he said that regardless of the procedure for appointment, all employees who perform their duties well have a right to receive salaries.

FDE Director General Shahnaz A. Riaz was not available for comments.
