MANSEHRA: The Shinkiari police have arrested three Hazara University students for violence on campus.

The arrests were made during a search operation on the university’s premises.

Mansehra assistant commissioner Naveed Ahmad led the action.

Two student groups clashed on Thursday after members of a group thrashed a university guard for stopping a student from driving into the premises along with an outsider. The arrested men were charged with firing gunshots in the air and injuring eight people, including six students, by hurling a hand grenade on Thursday.

The police said nine students were named in the FIR lodged by the university’s administration and three of them had been arrested.

They said they were raiding different places to arrest other suspects for legal action.

On Friday, the situation remained calm as the university closed campus for summer vacation and didn’t allow students to enter the premises.

Mansehra assistant commissioner Naveed Ahmad said the district administration could help the university it maintain law and order on campus if the need arose.

University forms panel to probe Thursday clash between student groups

He said the search operation was conducted at the request of the university’s vice chancellor.

“When the Karakoram Highway was blocked, we had to step in and to arrest violence suspects,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Hazara University dispatched a preliminary report of Thursday violence to its chancellor, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor, and formed a six-member committee to probe the incident.

The report said Thursday’s was purely a clash between two student groups.

A committee consisting of heads of different departments will probe violence, fix responsibility for it and give recommendations to check such incidents in future.

The university said those found guilty of violence would be dealt with strictly so that no one dare do such acts in future.

STRIKE OBSERVED: The paramedics of government health facilities across Mansehra district on Friday observed strike at workplaces to demand up-gradation of pay scales.

The protesters didn’t do duty except at emergency departments.

Like other local health facilities, visitors to King Abdullah Teaching Hospital, the only tertiary health care hospital in the district, also suffered a lot due to the strike.

District president of Paramedical Staff Association Waheed Akram told reporters at a strike camp established at Kath that the strike would continue until the demand was not met.

He said paramedics from across the district would assemble outside the provincial assembly in Peshawar on June 15 for a protest.

“In 2006, the then government had accepted our demand of upgrading our pay scales but since then, no government tried to to accept our just demand. Now, we want to get our rights by agitation,” he said.

MAN KILLED: A man was killed and two were injured when a van plunged into a deep ravine in Susal Galli area here on Friday.

The accident occurred after the driver lost the van’s control while negotiating a sharp turn on the way to Oghi from Mansehra.

The driver, Mohammad Amjad, suffered critical injures in the accident and died on the way to a Mansehra hospital.
