FAISALABAD, Oct 4: The District Coordination Officer has formed a 20-member committee to remove objections raised by some villagers and politicians about the sinking of tubewells along the Jhang Branch canal to supply water to the city.

The committee will present its report to the District Nazim within a fortnight.

It will also convince the people about the positive effects of the foreign-funded water supply project.

DCO Tahir Hussain will be the head while the Wasa managing director will act as its secretary. Its members are: MNAs Nisar Ahmed, Mushtaq Cheema, MPAs Jehanzeb Gill, Faizullah Kamoka, Nighat Saleem, Tehsil Nazims of City and Saddar, EDO Waseem Ajmal, journalists Shahbaz Ahmed and Tanveer Shaukat, union council Nazims Mashood Gill and Nadeem Sindhu, advocate Shahbaz Kissana, Liaquat Ali, consultant Rana Muhammad Saleem, Dr Tariq, Professor of Ground Water Hydraulics, Centre of Excellence in Water Resources (UET), Lahore, and an Irrigation department representative.

Villagers living along the Jhang Branch Canal had launch a protest movement around a month ago against the Wasa decision to install tubewells for the supply of sweet water to the urban population.

The committee has been asked to complete its report within 15 days so that formal work could be started on this important project after removing the fears of the area people.

Governor: Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool will preside over the 53rd session of the alumni association at the University of Agriculture here on Oct 23.

Agri Varsity Vice-Chancellor Dr Riaz Hussain Qureshi will present the address of welcome to the governor.

Provincial Agriculture Minister Arshad Khan Lodhi, provincial secretaries of Agriculture and Livestock, Vice-Chancellors of Barani Agriculture University, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore, will also attend the session.
