ABBOTTABAD: The district administration has finalised arrangements for the local government elections scheduled to be held on Saturday (tomorrow).

According to officials, all arrangements, including duties of polling staff, provision of election material, transportation and security measures, have been finalised in all the 51 union councils of Abbottabad district.

According to deputy commissioner Khalid Mehmood, who is the district returning officer, timely departure of polling staff to their destinations would be ensured.

He said that security arrangements had been made to hold the entire process in a peaceful manner.

He said that an army unit would be at their disposal and could be deployed, if needed. About 4,483 candidates have been contesting the LG elections in the district, including 239 candidates for district seats, 253 for the two tehsils, 1,903 for general councillors, 526 for women seats, 810 for peasant councillors, 729 for youth councillors and 23 candidates contesting for minority seats.

In Abbottabad, 691,876 voters will cast their votes for 51 wards/union councils, including 195 village councils and 14 neighbourhood councils.

The poll officials have started moving to their designated areas as some of polling stations in Abbottabad district could be reached in two days. Also, the election material has been handed over to the presiding officers.

The traffic police have been impounding vehicles for the last three days in the district, which would be provided for transportation of the polling staff . A control room has been established at the office of district returning officer to monitor the election process.
