LAHORE: Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif says a state-of-the-art Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Centre is being set up in the provincial metropolis.

He said this at a meeting on Friday, which reviewed the project. Board of Governors of Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Centre President Dr Saeed Akhtar briefed participants on the project while the representative of an international company informed about the initial design.

Mr Sharif said the project would be a glorious addition to the public health facility. The completion of the institute and research centre would result in availability of the latest treatment facilities to kidney and liver patients under one-roof.

The chief minister said the centre would be a milestone in the public health sector where free treatment would be provided to poor and destitute patients in the institute. He said the project of vital importance would have to be completed speedily with national spirit and hard work.

He said improvements in the health sector and provision of modern treatment facilities to the masses were the top priority of the government.

He said reforms of revolutionary nature were being introduced in the health sector for its development and provision of modern treatment facilities to the people. He said an effective strategy had been adopted for ensuring availability of doctors and medicines in hospitals.

Mr Sharif said that the practical measures taken for the development of health facilities were yielding positive results.The establishment of Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Centre was a step in this direction. He said that autonomous board of governors had been set up for looking after the administrative affairs of the institute.

He said the centre would be made a state-of-the-art institution of South Asia and the latest medical facilities of international standard would be available to patients. The chief minister said a research centre would also be established in the institute.

He said austerity should be maintained in the construction work. He said that national resources were the trust of the masses and should be utilised properly.

He said the provincial steering committee should adopt measures expeditiously for the implementation of the project.

He ordered institutions concerned to provide maximum cooperation to the centre and no effort should be spared for completion of this project on time. He said the provincial steering committee should hold regular meetings regarding the project. The chief minister also constituted a committee for the purchase of medical equipment for the project.

Dr Akhtar said the centre would be benchmark and all out efforts will be made for its completion within stipulated period.

He said that this center will be a state-of-the-art health complex. Provincial Minister for Housing Tanvir Aslam Malik, Adviser on Health Khawaja Salman Rafique, the chief secretary, the senior Board of Revenue member, the Planning and Development chairman, the SNGPL managing director, the Lesco chief executive officer and senior officials and members of BoGs of the centre were present.
