ISLAMABAD: Expressing dissatisfaction over Pakistan’s ranking in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI), President Mamnoon Hussain urged the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Wednesday to net the big fish involved in corruption.

Addressing a seminar held by NAB and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), he said corruption created a sense of insecurity, exacerbated poverty and added to the misfortune of vulnerable segments of society.

“Although there has been an improvement in Pakistan’s ranking in the CPI, this is not enough and we have to work more vigorously to combat the menace,” he said, in reference to the 126th rank of Pakistan in the CPI.

“Its roots are linked to injustice, mistrust, suspicion, extremism and terrorist activities and a nation cannot prosper without accountability,” he said.

Calling for social boycott of corrupt elements, he said that primary responsibility for ensuring a culture of good governance lay with the civil administration. “Keep working to ensure effective accountability and encourage civil administration to apprehend big fish against whom ample evidence exists,” he said.
